I don't see why people use free internet with ANY ads, since you can now get unlimited access for as low as $5 a month...

$5 a month is $60 a year. Over 10000 years, I save $600,000.

Also, $5 equals one all you can eat chinese buffet on Tuesdays.

Also, the cheapest isp around here is $8.90/month and you have to sign up 6 months at a time.

Also I need an ISP for when I'm not getting it for free at school.

The amexOL.net feels like the real deal. Easy to setup and fast connection. Thanks loudmouth. The free MSN deal from my company just got over and this is exactly what I need.

Altavista used to give me better connection speeds and also kept me on longer.

1) Nettaxi
2) Barnes and Noble
Update: here goes one more:
Funcow.com
I haven't had experience with any of them, so please let me know if you ever had experience with one of these Free ISP's.

Has anybody been able to register with the Barnes & Noble ISP? Every time I complete the registration, the box turns white, and nothing happens until they say I have to register within 30 minutes, then it hangs up. It doesn't matter whether I register as a new user or as an existing Yahoo member. But while I'm waiting for the registration process to complete, their ISP works fine for everything else.

LarryMoeNCurly,
I had similar problems with B&N. So far among the free ISP, the best is amexOL.net. I have also tried bluelight (kmart/yahoo), netzero, juno, freei.

Uhhh, ohhhh.

I wonder how long before the AnandTech effect brings down Amex free ISP service. It is just the thing for some kids I'm helping out. (Got cable myself.)

Amex seems to keep this deal kinda quiet. It's not at all obvious (or perhaps not there at all) as an offering on their regular website where you go to check cardmember benefits, your statement with password, etc.

It might perhaps be wise to not tell every single passing acquitance about this. Just keep it to your 10 nearest and dearest, or something?
