AVG is much faster. I have to turn off AVS protection each time I play CS:Source (Amd Athlon64 @ 2.5GHz, 1Gb memory). It slows down the system for about 2 minutes after reboot too.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can fix my problem.

For some reason this AV isn't allowing me to share my files.

Ever since I installed it, people can no longer look into my folders.

Help?

because according to the link below provided by brikis98, the free Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 deal I scored at CompUSA isn't available past 11/11/2006.

At CompUSA they're selling Kaspersky Anti-Vir 6 boxed CD-ROM for $59.99 with a $60 online rebate.
(If you mail in your rebate request, you get $40, but if you apply online, you get $60.)

I bought it and am now awaiting the rebate, which CompUSA says it intentionally delays for 21 days.

You pay sales tax on the $59.99, you get $60 back, leaving you a tiny amount out of pocket (in my state it cost me $4.64 net)

Zest for life!!!

From CompUSA to me:

Rebates Approved and Processing

The following rebate(s) have been approved and will be mailed after the merchandise return period ends.

Rebate (click for details) Amount Trx Date Status
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 $60.00 11/08/06 Pending

All rebates are pended for 21 days from the purchase date to give you the time to return the product if you are not satisfied. If you return the product you are no longer eligible for the rebate.

That deal actually had two rebates and after shipping and tax, you were PAID around $31.xx to TAKE the Kaspersky!

Oh, and Office Depot has it for $59.99 - $60.00 MIR. If you use a $10 coupon (found elsewhere), you can get paid to take it (maybe again)!

Oh, and I've used ANTIVir for almost a year and the AOL scanner found 37 viruses on my 3 machines that ANTIVir hadn't detected.

EULA says you agree to be spammed. If not, do not proceed. Now you know why it is free.

Open AOL Kaspersky > settings > scan > startup objects > uncheck run on system start > apply

I run AOL Kaspersky on an old Athlon 2400+ rig and have no lag in games when auto-protect is enabled. At least you can simply right-click the tray icon and Pause Protection.

That's just the current version. They'll be releasing a newer free version to take its place.

AVG will remain free, but you need to uninstall (or repair) the old 7.1 since it expires Jan. 2007 and upgrade to 7.5

Update of AVG 7.1 to 7.5

Run the AVG Free Edition 7.5 Setup program
Click "Next >" on the AVG "Welcome!" screen
Click "Accept" on the "License Agreement on Use of an AVG Free Edition" screen
Select "Repair installation" on the "Select Setup Type" screen and click "Next >"
Select "Restart the computer now" (pre-selected by the program automatically) and click "OK" on the "Installation Complete!" screen to restart your computer and complete the installation

GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.

I ran the AVS for a few days after having to fight to get it installed. Got IRP Stack location stop screens on startup. I found this fix and it worked. (stolen from google groups discussion Here)

"A solution to this problem was provided to me by Kaspersky's Support
team.

There is a registry entry that controls the load order of the
Kaspersky driver that causes this error.

The key is located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Klif

Inside of the Klif key is an entry named "Start" the default value is
1.

The possible values for the entry are 1,2, and 3.

The values define the order of driver load:

1. Boot
2. Automatic
3. Demand

Level "2" allows the driver to load after all main drivers have been
loaded.

Kaspersky asked that I try using value "2" by booting into safe mode
and changing the value. They said that this does not reduce
protection level at any rate, but can solve conflicts that can occur
with the IRP stack.

I followed their advice and changed the value from 1 to 2 and it fixed
the problem."

I ended up uninstalling it as I actually found the program somewhat intrusive and caused long bootup times. Went back to Antivir as in recent comparisons is is showing the best detection rates of all of them.
