John, that's an excellent page you've developed. Cannot imagine the amount of time and effort you had to put into it, though. A most valuable resource!!!

I do like your summary/conclusion about free antivirus software:

Check out the CastleCops Wiki article and the About.com review that compares the three popular freeware anti-virus programs. Honestly I would avoid all three of these free AV's and stick with a proven winner. (Kaspersky, NOD32, AOL AVS)

The above quoted passage was taken from John's excellent webpage...here!!!

Gotta agree with your conclusions. While I've been using the pay-for version of Kaspersky for quite a while now, I cannot imagine why anyone would want to use AntiVir, Avast!, or AVG when the AOL AVS is just as capable.....and free.

For the "bloatware" complaint about KAV, while running it does take about 10-12MB of memory, I'd think that's about average for a decent AV program.......and this complaint surfaces over and over, esp. when the same people use Firefox, as I do too. Firefox is very well known to expand its memory usage to well over 100-200MB.

Personally, right now I have two Firefox 2 browser windows open, one with 5 tabs open and one with 2 tabs open, and it's using over 140MB of memory. So, while one can complain about KAV using 10MB or so of memory, I think it's rather disingenuous to complain about that when Firefox 2 has such a large memory hit while running.

Keep up the good work, John. I just wish others would actually bother to read what you've spent so much time and effort to produce.

PS......for those of you having trouble getting the activation codes for the AOL AVS, try a bunch of different email addresses. You can put one after another in on the page before the download page to try different portals/etc. I found one that AOL sends the activation code almost immediately to, so just went back over and over to the "put your email in" page and received several activation codes almost as fast as the download page loaded. Worth a try.

I did this because some of my family members have had trouble getting the codes sent to various email addresses, esp. on Yahoo, MSN, gmail, etc. I used one that AOL seemed to like, got several activation codes and sent each one a different code. Now all have a decent AVS client.

Is anyone else having trouble activating the virus scan? I tried with several keys and none worked. I even downloaded new files and requested a brand new activation code and still nada.

I couldnt connect to activation server the other day on a customer's PC- I thought it was his system. I hadnt had a chance to try a fresh install on another pc...sounds like activation server is down.

If you have trouble connecting to download/activate - try Firefox instead of IE. It failed twice for me using IE so I had to switch to Firefox and it worked fine.

activation has nothing to do with browser.

It does if it won't load the next screen after you enter your email address, which is what happend to me twice.

submitting an email address to get an activation code emailed to you and ACTIVATION are two different things. the ACTUAL process of activation occurs after install where the program generates an activate or activate later screen, and has NOTHING to do with the browser.
ps- esquared clearly stated he tried several keys- which means he had ALREADY successfully submitted for and received the key codes (which is what is done through the browser), but that it wouldn't activate with said codes once received and tried.

BIGFOOTPI is correct. A lot of people have been having activation issues after the code is input and you click next to begin the activation. It refuses to submit the code and contact the server. In most cases it is due to the firewall that is running on your pc. Try activating in safe mode w/ networking.

It's pretty strange but I did as John suggested and turned off my Comodo firewall and reinstalled AVS with the activation code and it worked. I've installed this AVS on another one of my computers with Comodo running, without a problem. Not sure why this happened on this one but it's another option I have to remember if I run into this again. Thanks.

edit:
I didn't go into safe mode. I just turned off the firewall.

Downloaded today, works great. If you need something for cheap than try this. I just refuse to pay for virus protection because it is in the best interest of the whole net based economy to ensure that we can all use the web safely.

As for all the AOL bashing it is probably deserved. Yet, I work for Time Warner and they are now trying to position the AOL brand as a content provider instead of a subscription service simply because there is way more cash in advertising than in an aging ISP. My 2 cents...Enjoy.

I can't get AVS to activate.

Downloaded fine, received keys fine. but when trying to activate, keep getting error message "License key creation or activation date is invalid. Check system settings".

Tried disabling firewall, rebooting in safemode with network settings , still doesn't work. tried multiple keys and installers. Anyone else have this problem?
