Educators Make the Move to Desktop Linux in Classrooms

Linspire's Education Program Helps Schools Achieve One-to-One Computer Initiatives

SAN DIEGO, October 13, 2005 - In a nationwide effort to help provide students with affordable computers, Linspire, Inc. today launched a new, low-cost licensing program for schools who wish to install a Linux desktop operating system as an alternative to the more expensive Microsoft Windows operating system. Through the program, educators will be able to sign up for single copies or per-unit volume license packs of Linspire at special educator rates. Educators who are interested in the program and would like to receive a free evaluation copy of Linspire should visit http://www.linspire.com/education

Thats great but to me all version of linux are dead except Suse since novell picked them up. Thats where I believe the majority of people who are using linux are migrating to.

Oh and Knoppix is still good.

Its not that the other distro's are bad at all its that Novell is about the best trusted networking company out there supporting linux.

I agree that SuSe is great. We use it on our server at work and I have a copy at home. But don't discount Linspire and the other distros. Each one has it's own special feature. Linspire is catering to be an easy migration for windows users. Mainly in the installation area. Their Click-N-Run makes installing Linux apps and upgrades too simple! It's awesome!

Also, Linspire's founder, Michael Robertson, has put alot of $$$ in reviving OpenSource projects which has been all-around great for the entire Linux community.

I have lindows 4.5 on my laptop and its a great distro just doesn work on my school network. At home it works great and is a very easy switch from Windows. Personally I've had problems when it come to Suse, specifically installing my sound card for my laptop and it seems there's little help out there.

I'm glad to see that some people around here like SUSE, as I do.

There are so many ubuntu fanboys that keep pushing it on everyone in the OS forum. I have tried Ubuntu and just don't buy into all of the hype surrounding it.

Check out the page hit ranking (right side) of the page at http://distrowatch.com. I've been using Ubuntu (dual booting w/WinXP Pro) for awhile now, and it's stable, updated frequently, and recognizes my wireless, and widescreen laptop resolution with almost no effort on my part.

I've tried about 20+ live CD's lately, and a couple different installed distros (Xandros, Ubuntu, etc.) and I'd recommend Ubuntu for those who haven't used it yet.

You should try Linspire 5.0. It's a HUGE upgrade from Lindows 4.5 - Alot more support for networking devices, customization, drivers, etc

Signed up, answered two emails indicating I was using it for a possible move to open source OS (we run Novell inhouse now, so once Netware 6 is dated we will closely check into Suse) and had received my login info, but I do not get a link to the ISO's, just links to Firefox and Thunderbird. I found a torrent link to LinspireLive so I may just use that for now. I love the CNR idea, but having absolutely no previous Linux experience (exept for Debian 5.1 on an old 486) I am looking for something even a semi-coherent monkey can run and install.

I also have Linspire 4.5, but as noted in an earlier post, 5.0 is definitely a better product.

I would give XANDROS a shot if you want an easy version of Linux.. it was really a breeze to setup and hardware support was suprisingly good.

just my 2 cents!

Well, rather than contact Linspire tech support and gripe about my inability to D/L the iso, I just used a link to the LinspireLive iso and burned that to a CD. I previously used Knoppix so I like the idea of a bootable OS on CD that you can show to the average Windows email/internet noobster. Funny thing is, when you ask 10 Linux users for an easy to use Linux distro, you will get 11 different answers !!

As mentioned, Suse will be our first choice, simply because we are a Novell network shop, but I prefer to shop around and see what the others offer at least.
