<< Hey iwearnosox:
Could you provide more details on when the best (and worst)
times to have your auction close are? I have wondered this for
a long time, and eBay is (predictably) cagey about telling you! >>
Sure. I have some graphs but it's probably not proper to disseminate them, so:
eBay peak traffic occurs every week at 6:30-7:00 pm pacific time on Sundays. Friday and saturday traffic has been very weak lately, about 70% of Sundays traffic. Mondays have been very good lately, about 90% of Sunday's traffic. The slope from Sunday to Friday is actually a steadily declining slope, then a peak again the following sunday.
Never, ever end your auction between the hours of 11pm and 10 am-ish pacific- traffic nosedives and doesn't become more reasonable until then. (10 am traffic is about 70% of that daily peak, steadily climbing with a point of inflection @ about 4pm pacific, until peaking @ 6:30-7 pm.)
Beware of the July 4th holiday, it will be like most holidays, reducing the traffic below typical summer numbers. If you're launching your auction today have it be a three day auction (only commodity type items should be sold like this- video cards, processors, etc.) Do the rest as a 10 day auction, ending the Sunday after next. It leapfrogs the holiday (hopefully) and will get you a better yield on what you're selling, provided post holiday traffic is good and your items don't depreciate. (Like all the junk sitting around me now that needs a home!)
Hope this helps!
