All the 60+ year olds should do this deal and ask for a personal in home demonstation. I would get a big kick out of hearing about a recruiter going to get grandpa to sign up for basic training. Can't you just see the look on the recruiters face?

Go for the pen, the U.S. Marines are the most respected military organization in the world. Those winers above are "non-rates" who should have never joined to begin with. Remember, "The Few", because not everyone can hack it.

I was in for 6 years. It helped me earn my CS degree. Now I am a successful web developer. Believe me, the USMC part on my resume stood out and put me on top!

Semper Fi! Long live the Corps!

I got a keychain from them awhile back. Not sure if I should push it and go for the pen too.

Since up for the Marines, and get a lot of free crap. Everything except a future.

Gee, I guess the Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering and the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and the patent I hold as a result make me pretty unmarketable. I hope I have a future seeing as how I've had my education paid for by the U.S. Marines and am currently active duty.

At least I can spell SIGN so I guess I've got more of a future in writing than some.

No organization is perfect but whiners make me sick in any.

I got bad news for you, bucko. Any patent developed while in the service enures to the benefit of the U.S. government, not you. Another real benefit the military service provides.

But you sound like a smart guy. You'll do well enough, I'm sure. Probably as well as you would have done if you have atteneded a public or private university. Sure, the Marines paid for education. But then you work for sub-standard wages for the next 3-4 years (or is it 5?) The difference in your salary would have paid back all the student loans you would have incurred if you didn't get a scholarship to the college. And you could kept your patent rights, too.

By the way, private sector nuclear engineering jobs are in big demand now, huh? No knew nuke plants in about twenty years. Even the military is about to convert the Trident subs from nuclear to convenetional ballistic missiles.

Look at my username. 'nuff said. Military is only good if you want it to change you for the better...if you're a slacker then you'll turn into a slacker two weeks after boot.

God forbid half you whiners ever gave anything back to your country. Yes the Marines isn't for everyone as told by the few non-hackers of above, but if was for everyone it would be the Boy Scouts. As for getting anything out of the Marine Corps, yes I did, but you only get out of life of what you put in, and if you were a loser on the outside, you'd be a loser in the military too.

I suppose I shouldn't waste my time but will anyhow.

Life is what you make of it. Any organization is as well. I could make much more than I do now. I recently chose between continued service after 9 years and a lucrative civilian career in IT having recently architected and fielded a multi-million dollar messaging system Corps-wide. I chose to remain in for love of the Corps and the people within her ranks. Having worked alongside the best and brightest in companies like Microsoft, CISCO, Sun, and others who supported me, I find no equal to the dedication, knowledge, and professionalism than the ranks of my beloved Corps. Business magazines and respected writers who study institutional efficiency have repeatedly upheld the Corps as one of the finest examples anywhere in spite of her flaws.

My point was to refute the ridiculous notion that a person does not have a future in joining the Services. In fact, the exact opposite is true. The aggressiveness with which companies recruit our folks away to lucrative jobs belies an irrational and purely emotional argument to the contrary which is based on no facts.

You have the right to assert anything you want. You can assert that the Earth is flat, that birds don't fly or that folks in the military have no future. None of these assertions can be supported by factual evidence. It's a free country and I support the right of the uninformed to make ridiculous statements even as I defend the Constitution against any who would take that right away.

OOH-RAH!

I have to add my $.02, which is exactly what it is worth.

CentralScrutinizer, it is real easy to sit back and talk about something you know nothing about. Your theory about college is probobly right but there are principals you not learn in any college. Discipline, cohesion, tact, honor stand out. Without principals like these a good high paying job will be easy come easy go.
