As stated before, you may also want to check a side project called Autopatcher. They are shooting for monthly releases of an all in one update CD with Critical, Recomended, and even extra usefull apps. They are also almost finished with AP2k3 and AP Win2k. Just pop the CD in and let it patch...that easy.

I have the CD and it is a waste of time. You basically recieve the latest service pack for all the various OSes and like 3 or critical updates that came out in FEB. Not worth the hassle because you can download all the updates and burn them to CD yourself.

MS should wise up and have all the updates for each OS on seperate CDs.

It's easier to just slipstream SP2 RC1 into your WinXP install.

slipstream?

Integrate the Service Pack file into the Windows installation CD saving you the time of having to install it seperately. Currently only available with 2000/XP/2003.

Thanks Snook!!

I have DSL, but this is still VERY handy in case I would need to do a Clean install of XP later on. But two questions:

1. You said it has updates through March '04, but the order page says the updates are through October '03??

2. Does this include XP SP1a Service Pack, or just hot-fixes?

Thanks again man!

I'd steer clear of XPSP2 until it goes prime time. Right now it has some annoying bugs that need to be ironed out. One such bug is that sometimes when you visit a webpage or hit the back button, you will see HTML code instead of the actual web page. Talk about pain in the ass.

For a slipstream no, but it works fine for me. However if you do an upgrade from a previous Windows version you can uninstall.

Why use the MS Critical Update CD when there is the Autopatcher?

A lot of people have asked, "Why Patch our system?" or "Why AutoPatcher?". Well, I thought this would be a good opportunity to explain to you why we exist. Well, first of all, here's an Article for you to read:

Microsoft has a message for Windows users: Patch your computers quickly.

As you can see in that article, there are a lot of vulnerabilities out there, that many people don't know they have. Patching your system reduces the chance you'll be affected by a virus (like Blaster) or Hackers exploiting problematic code. Now Microsoft does ask everyone turn on Critical Updates, but for people on Dial-up, that could be a hassle. Also, some of their patches don't even show up on it! They've also released a Security CD, but that too doesn't contain everything, in fact, it only contains Critical Updates through October! That still leaves many people with holes in their Operating System. That's where we come in. The AutoPatcher is designed to quickly patch a system with the most current updates (and tweaks) available. It runs silently in the background, and needs no inputs once started. It just has to be downloaded once, then burnt to a CD, and you can patch as many systems as you want, with no extra bandwidth usage (for you companies that pay for it), and also for you users who have friends, family, and relatives on Dial-up.

All in all, I feel the AutoPatcher is a very useful product, and can help many people stay updated, and not have to worry about vulnerabilities. If you haven't already, give it a try. Download a copy or order a CD... see why so many people have already started AutoPatching.

Get the full version here (254MB)

The full version allows you to do the Full, Lite, or Ultralite install. You can read more about it here.

Can someone tell me where I can find information/instructions on how to slipstream into WinXP?

Thanks.

This thread's title says "up to March 23, 2004 updates" but the MS site still says February 2004 Release. Are people receiving 'March" or "February" versions?

Thanks.

FYI.

I just received my copy and it is the February 2004 edition. This is in contrast to what some other people (i.e. see thread title) are reporting.

i put this in the OS forum but nobody can really help me. I was wondering if someone can help me. Im pretty new to this

I recently about 3-4 months ago recieved the Security Update from Microsoft. Recently purchased the 200GB hitachi harddrive for a friend. Now when installing it on his PC i realize he doesnt have service pack 1 and he needs it in order to get the full 200GB other wise he is only allowed the 137GB limitation. We are in an area where we dont have broadbvand and dial up is the only option. I was wondering if someone can burn me a copy of the file as it is no longer available on Microsofts web Site. With my luck i have misplaced the Update CD as well as the virus protection CD. If someone can please help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance to all.

Are asking for someone to burn a cd with SP1 on it? I don't think this is possible, and even if it is, i doubt it's going to happen. Anyone who sees this post is probably going to assume you have an illegal copy of windows and are trying to get SP1. I thought the update CD had SP1 on it.... in which case you would have installed it from there... unless your copy of XP is illegal.

I had the Disc but i had misplaced it. Upon cleaning i have found it again. I personally have a legit copy, but my friend has an illegal copy. We both don't have DSL or any type of broadband where we live so when doing windows updates we don't have to spend endless hours just waiting for the service pack 1 downloads. No im not just asking for the Service pack1 its a Disk with all the security Updates up until February 2004. It also includes an antivirus program. So i was just asking if someone could make me a copy of the whole disk which also includes the service pack. But don't need it anymore since i have relocated my copy.
