Correct me if I'm wrong, but it says Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1. Doesn't that mean its just the add-on for bugs fixes and tweaks?

From the MS site:

This is just Virtual PC 2004 SP1, much like you now get Windows XP Home SP2 installed on many new computers...

Looks like the real thing to me.

Q. What are the differences between Virtual PC and Virtual Server?

A. Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 is a virtual machine solution for desktop operating systems. Microsoft Virtual Server 2005, on the other hand, is a solution for server operating systems. Although Virtual PC and Virtual Server share many features in common, they are designed for different purposes. As a result, some of their features are also quite different. Microsoft has created a white paper that explains the differences between Virtual PC and Virtual Server, and discusses the scenarios in which it is appropriate to use one or the other.

what does it do? Why would someone want a virtual o\s when you can have a real one?

you can mess around with various o/s's, i.e. linux, vista, etc., without needing to mess around with dual booting, messing with partitions, or the need for an extra computer.

VMware just GA'd Virtual Server 1.0.0. It's also free and runs on linux or Windows. I've never used MS virtual server, but I can tell you that VMware runs great, with lots of neat features like point in time snapshots and the like. Virtual server used to be called GSX server and they used to charge for it...now it's free for everyone...700,000 downloads so far.

also with virtual servers, you can basically run the OS on any hardware platform. Therefore if one server goes down, you can easily have it up and running on another one in no time.

Oh wells, I will then have to try it on my main system.

By the way how well would this work (if at all) if I have 32-bit XP and set up a VPC that runs 64-bit x86 Fedora Core 5?
Edit: never mind. It only supports MS-DOS, OS/2 Warp, and Windows family products.

Vmware's product is called VMWARE SERVER, not Virtual Server. Virtual Server is Microsoft's product.
