Fair enough on your opinion of free servers, but I disagree that it's illegal. The EULA is hogwash, they can write whatever they like in there, but it doesn't make it law. It wouldn't hold up in court.

I'd like to see you take that one to court. EULA is a binding contract, which means it's contract law. If EULA's were not "legally enforcable", they wouldn't exist.

Then pre nup's wouldn't exist... contracts to those under 18 wouldn't exist... oh wait, they do.

AO is free... expansions will cost you

Awesome game... incredibly rich environment... loads of content... bugs from initial release have long been corrected.

It CAN be free by paying with the ingame credits (money), 150mill a month i believe which the vast majority of players would not be able to pay and have anything left over to buy new ships and skills to actually play the game.

I recommend two monthly fee games - DDO and LOTRO. They're quite different but each is very good in it's own way. DDO is very heavy on scripted dungeon questing with traps and deformable dungeons but light on the "massive" elements as nearly everything is instanced. LOTRO is more of a traditional MMO with a much less all consuming focus on raiding at endgame than WOW has.

A couple of my friends play Conquer Online - one of the more popular free asian MMO's. It's more of a first gen MMO with a fairly open PvP environment so it could be a good fit if you were looking for something old school.

Thank you so much for the info all!
As a side, I think one of the reasons I don't want a subscription-type game is that I'd feel obligated to play it, even if I wasn't enjoying it that much.
Anyway, thanks again.

If you find yourself not enjoying or using something that is supposed to just entertain you, then cancel the subscription (goes for all pure entertainment subscriptions, like cable TV as well, although you will probably need to keep the internet service), most MMOs to my knowledge will not delete the characters when your account is not active.

hell, even most of the ones that do charge still suck ass.

rofl, GW kicks any other MMOs ass any day, and no fee!

Guild Wars != MMO.

Guild Wars sucks too.

Cabal Online just launched a open beta which will then turn into a free to play ( still have to buy the retial version) MMO game. It's a okay but it does have a 110 level grind I believe. The combat system is okay but the animations and spells kick arse but that's about it IMHO.

This is exactly what I do so I play Eve for free now. All you have to do is grind L3 missions and mine here and there to accumulate 150mil.

Guild Wars is pretty good. Definitely check out a trial before buying (as with pretty much all MMOs). It's not an MMO, but the mechanics are similar to one, you just party with a handful of people instead of dozens. The original (GW Prophencies) is old and should be cheap, but it doesn't feel old as they have kept up with updates, and the graphics are pretty nice still!

Anarchy Online is free. Knight Online, as well as the others mentioned. But the free MMOs usually have something wrong with them... most get sick of them pretty quickly although since they are free, you might check some out.

Runescape, free with no CD, but if you want better stuff and access to more area/quests then you have to pay. Be warned it could take up to a month of play to realize how much it sucks.

I wasted an afternoon re-making the bronze axe (for tree-cutting) that I accidentally sold - I mined the ore, smelted it, then smithed an axe. Then I realized the game sucked.

Yeah, I feel ya. I leveled up to 52 before I realized what a sad waste of time WoW really is.
