"Hehe, I wonder if the laws against destruction of US currency still apply if it's already been shredded. "

I wonder why so many people believe this is a law. It is perfectly legal to destroy and deface currency in this country. That's why you see all those little vending machines that flatten and stamp pictures onto coins.
The only time defacing currency is illegal is if it is done in an attempt to defraud. (ie: cutting a penny to fit into a dime slot, or trying to make a $2 look like a $20.)

To prove my point, I have created my own brick of shredded money from my money in my wallet. See? No one has come to arrest me!

Now lemme see if I can tape these up again...

i don't think this is for real.
after you completed the survey, if you hit "return to ny fed's site", it takes you to some public forum.
it's so weirld.

That's just because of poor programming. It acts just like the back button on your browser They assume that since you are filling out the survey, your last visited site in that web browser window must have been the NY fed reserve back since that's "obviously" the only place you could have gotten the link from. Remember what the word "assume" means.

Its the fed, what else are they gonna give away for completing a survey, real money? I think that mints and maybe some of the fed banks? are clearing houses where banks ship the old money to get replaced. (old money thats falling apart, old issues or whatever, like all the old money with the old designs) The mint then gets takes some of the money they just printed, shreds the old money and then sends the new back to the bank for replacement. I probably have some of the details wrong, but there is a process like that that goes on continually. You probably haven't visited one of the US mints before, they sell bags of the shredded money, or if you are lucky you might get some for free like in this case

Money gets shredded at the mint all the time, old bills and what not. To them they're sending out bricks of trash. ; )

I received my free money from the Fed today. A little disappointing...it's about 3.5 inches tall by 2 inches in diameter and the bills are compressed and pulverized to mush. One inch = $1,000.00 cash. There's no way anyone is going to be putting these bills back together. Oh well, I guess it's back to the tedious task of printing my own...so, anybody know where I can get some cheap paper and ink? :Q

Thanks for the post though.

Considering this was almost a month ago, I'm not surprised that it's a dead deal.
Anyways, I haven't gotten mine yet, but I'll keep my eyes open and hope it comes
