Plain and simple, you believe and practice what you want and I will do likewise. I will also fight for you to worship in your manner as long as it does not harm me in any way. However, if I feel so convicted of my beliefs and the happiness they have brought me please do not feel offended if I attempt to share them with you.

I also joined the LDS church at a later point in my life (19) and I've never been happier. Everyone has a right to believe what he/she wants, that principle is even one of our basic tenets (see # 11).

In regards to the articles by the ex-Mormon, I guess if we believed everything from an ex-member of a church we'd have to discredit Christ and believe Judas. I feel bad that he chose to disassociate himself from the LDS church but it was his own decision.

Mormons were kicked from town to town and state to state before they arrived in Salt Lake. NY saw enough of them and it went from there.

How dare you make fun of such a horrific act by one group of human beings on another. You have no idea what you're talking about if you so casually throw around the forced exodus of thousands of men, women, and children across most of the continental US in the middle of winter with little more than the shirts on their backs. Do you have any idea how many good people died because of that?

Can you even imagine having to bury your whole family along the route you've been forced to take because fellow human beings drove you from your home? That happened to many families. Or maybe the shock of finding out that the Governor of your state has ordered that you either leave or you will be exterminated because of what you believe.

I don't care what you believe, no one deserves that kind of treatment. Not even your worst enemy, let alone someone who just believes differently than you do.

Sorry to get a little steamed but that statement really horked me off.

If anyone would like to get the scoop on what Mormons believe you can check out this site

The order that we have the bible now was put together by a man called Athanasius, who was a bishop of Alexandria (~300-375 AD). As you are well aware, the bible is in NO chronological order. He put the 4 gospels at the front, since they were all similar. Then he put the Acts, then he proceeded to put all the writings of Paul by size, he put hebrews last because he didnt even know it was from Paul to the hebrews. He left out much of what was originally available. He didnt even believe most of the stuff that the bible contained. So talking about adding to or taking away. lemme tell ya, that boy hit it on the head!

I have lived in Utah my whole life, I am not mormon. Over my years I have felt as if they are a very elite group of people. When I was in 5th grade or so I lost one of my best friends because I did not attend church, his mom said I was a bad influence and had invited me to attend church with their family in order to keep hanging out with my friend. Of course even then I refused to do such a thing and nothing has really changed since, although I became friends with that same kid later when his parents were in less control.

I have attended sacrament with my ex-girlfriend and the other people in their ward asked her parents politely if they would not invite me anymore, I had long hair and a beard, although I was dressed very appropriately and never did anything that could give them reason to ask for me to leave.

I have never had good luck with the older mormons but all the kids are really cool, just the generation of my friends parents (40+ year olds) have been disrespectful and try to be more than they are not.

Religion is great when it gives a group of people something to believe in and thrive for; personally I need nothing to help me out and I could care less if there is no afterlife nor do I care if my fate is heaven or hell. If that stuff exists then great; I am confident with the way I treat humanity and the planet contrary to my non-religious ways and immoral actions I will still reach the highest point of afterlife if one exists. Morality is in the eye of the beholder: drinking, premarital sex, smoking...all that good stuff if done responsibly is all good given it doesn't effect anyone but the first party persons, IMO.

Mormons are great people, same with every other religion; it is just the few that piss others off and give them all a bad name. Even if they have been racist, sexist, or any of that other stuff in the past they are rapidly evolving and do not support the same principles as they may have in the past; every religion changes beliefs due to society norms.

based on the teachings of Christ... yeah...

Of course you do realize that mocking these beliefs as "crazy" is rather hypocritical when "regular" Christianity includes fun things like how some guy put two of EVERY ANIMAL ON THE PLANET onto a boat, how the first two humans ever lived in a garden but then eating an Apple/Pomegranate ruined it all because a TALKING SNAKE spoke to the female.

Now, what I do find kinda funny is that I ended up schooling a Mormon once about their own religion's racist roots when they were spouting off on how wonderfully tolerant it was while trashing some other religion. Of course modern day Mormonism no longer contains the rather insane depictions of African-Americans (they removed all the offending passages).

I have no real qualms with modern Mormons though (other than the occasional need to school them on their own religion's history lol) since they generally tend to be decent people, even if they may sometimes be somewhat unaware of themselves in one way or another. If I had qualms with everyone who didn't believe in the same things I believe in I'd have like, 5 billion people to have qualms with, and that'd be pretty stupid wouldn't it?

If you're Christian, there's 4 billion people who don't believe in what you believe in and think you're looney for believing in Jesus. If you're Muslim there's 4.7 billion people. If you're Athiest/non-religious/agnostic there's 4.9 billion people.

Point is, no matter what you believe in, most people on the planet don't believe in what you believe in. So please stop the ridiculous "Oh look at the funny religion, they're not like us!" crap, because most people on this planet could say the same about what you believe in.

Heh, did you guys know that 93% of National Academy of Sciences scientists are Atheists (vs 60.7% of all US scientists). More intruiging is that you can apparently be both Atheist and Jewish, as in of Jewish faith, because technically you can be a Reform Jew without believing in a god.

"Now I live a "faith-based" life b/c I have turned my life over to Jesus by accepting Him as my savior. The good works I perform do not constitute my faith, that is only a sign of my obedience. Who leads my life is a measure of my faith."

News update: Jesus having died around 2000 years ago makes it so that in ethical matters you have to make your own decisions. You can't simply log onto jesus.org and ask him what do do about a particular decision you have to make. The bible is not a precise road map that one can follow in order to receive "salvation". One of the main reasons there are over 10,000 different christian denominations is because of this fact. Whether you are a mormon, catholic, baptist, etc, you are simply a christian who chooses a particular sect in order to help you get through life.

If I recall David Koresh called himself a christian too... so maybe there are ways that aren't correct.

Mankind needs to move beyond the fairy tale of religion.

Some people can't affirm their own faith without villifying others'.

Usually these are the people who blindly believe, so they blindly resist.

Okay... let's get this straight... To hork is not to get angry. And contrary to recent usage and the mispelling of "hoark", it is not a sex act.

It came from Tim Allen's Home Improvement sitcom, where Tim said "I think I horked up something green this morning." So it is coughing up something... usually phlegm.

I just wanted to clarify.

For anybody who knows nothing of Mormons except that they used to allow multiple wives and are centered in Utah, check out the South Park episode from last season about the Mormon family that moved into town.

It makes great fun of the rediculousness of some of the stories in the Book of Mormon and the religion's origin claims, but in the end stresses the strengths of the religion.

I've worked with a few Mormon families for years. I've found that they range from extremely kind and generous people, to folks just trying to find their way in life, to an HR Manager that makes Catbert seem downright kind. In other words, normal people.

My neighbor had the best line I've heard yet for the Mormon door-to-door salepeople... er, I mean "missionaries". One of the missionaries asked her if she wanted to be saved, and that only 180,000 (?not sure about the exact number?) people were allowed into a part of heaven. Her reply was "Well, if I make it, one of you might get pushed out? Could you live with that?"
