Grrr...I never noticed the license date either, but I just checked mine (ver. 6 updated this morning) and the license date is 1-31-06--so I think you may be right about that. Though, I hope this isn't the end of the free version.

The older McAfee enterprise editions that are provided by universities are -amazing- (ie: McAfee 8.0i - they have none of the friendly user happy bloat crap that is bundled in the security suites and such). These free solutions are also fantastic, AVG particularly. I'd ditch NAV asap, and sweet jesus, NAV2006 is horrific.

No argument here, I've had Anti-Vir as my sole AV scanner for the past few months now. Freeware wins in my book.

don't forget Pc-cillin. My favorite and I've tried all of them. It's effective, clean and uses little system resources. Nod32 has the worst interface in the world but I'm told it's very good as well.

I agree with you there. This version McAfee works really well.

The only reason i am/will not try antivir is because of their update policy. I have not used avast but i use avg on my virtual images (microsoft virtualpc/vmware) so i don't have to buy a seperate liscence for each virtual image i run. I Avg is pretty good especially for being free. For programs you have to buy say just for antivirus i love trend micro pc-cillin. Yes i had to pay for it but for $20 for a year subscriptions can you complain that much? For suites i like zonealarm 2006. Its antivirus isn't as good as pc-cillin but its go the best software firewall and its not bloated all out to hell. One think i love Pc-Cillin is it updates definitions about every 3 hours.

Thanks for the heads up, OP. I update and then run Antivir every night while I'm sleeping, and I haven't gotten any alerts for a while now. A full scan usually takes about an hour or so. Now, with the new version, I'm just 7 mins. into the scan and it's already found 2 suspect files. Who knows how long I've had them on here?

Why why why did that review test based on one month and two month old data. No one who cares enough to read this review will leave their virus definitions over 1 month old. This completely invalidates their review process.

Plus, it's PC World we're talking about here...

I love Anti-Vir, works smoothly takes up very little system resources and has some of the best virus definition around. My favorite commerical one would probabily be PC Cillin, which has a similar feel to Anti-Vir. I absolutly hate and despise Nortan. I've seen Nortan take down way more systems than viruses ever have.

When you quote memory usage, it's generally a good idea to indicate virtual memory as well. Often times, if an app has been swapped out of RAM for other apps to be given the limelight, they'll show a small memory footprint but a large VM footprint.

In XP's task manager, go to the Processes tab, then click View-Select Columns, and check the "Virtual Memory Size" box. This will allow you to see how much memory a process is really using). Also, be sure to count all processes. Many AV apps will have a separate process for email scanning, browser stuff, etc.
