NOD32 is great, I've used it for a long time and I never even notice it's there running, but it's not free and it still doesn't catch everything. So layering is the best strategy, at least with a trojan cleaner.

I think the biggest feature for the average person is that scheduler/auto update is on by default. I think that feature alone has turned off alot of people about version 6 (since they didnt know an auto update feature existed).

So how do you turn on the auto-update feature in Version 6?

Scheduler tab, then put a tick in the Activate box for Daily Update (every 1440 minutes).

When this was released a few days ago it was full of bugs so the company stopped the downloads yesterday. This morning an updated download was put up so I foolishly installed it. It locks up my computer when you click on anything but SCAN. A corrupted image freezes the computer.

Still full of bugs so I uninstalled it and went back to AntiVir 6, but of course it was old. Better than nothing until they fix the bugs. W98SE

PC-Cillin is by far the beat anti-virus available right now but you would have to pay. Beforehand, I had AVG and it worked wonders for me. Do not use Norton or Mcafee unless you want to pour money down the gutter.

In XP's task manager, go to the Processes tab, then click View-Select Columns, and check the "Virtual Memory Size" box. This will allow you to see how much memory a process is really using). Also, be sure to count all processes. Many AV apps will have a separate process for email scanning, browser stuff, etc.

Is it normal for this program to take 3-5 minutes to see if there are any updates? Then I usually get an error message couldn't connect to server. If so, I'll go back to AVG.

works fine for me (nearly instant)

make sure your firewall isn't blocking the connection.

I'm using Avast for my x64 rig now. I had Anti-Vir 7.0 on another rig but its scan took forever long so back went my TrendMicro.

I like my AVG+ZoneAlarm combo better. Seems to work better than Norton//Mcafee.

Been using 7.0 for a couple of days now. Works perfect as does the auto update and scan features.

This software crashed on my old Win98se box with Voodoo 3500 vid card. Yes, it is an old piece of junk, but it does work, and it is a 2nd machine for my wife when I am hogging the Athlon64 3000+.

Meh...AntiVir6 was perfect. Updated to version 7 on 3 computers - all three went to hell. Thus far I've had to uninstall it on two for the time being, and I'm trying to troubule-shoot it on my personal computer. The computer seems to love locking up with this new update.

You see? That's the secret behind AntiVir 7. If your computer is locked up, you can't be hacked.

Very clever!

Hexium --

The German thread basically says not to worry about the licensing end date -- that you will be able to renew the license without any difficulty.

Wiedersehen....

meh antivir is really good stuff, but the new version causes lock ups for many users... i guess its not completely perfected yet... still can't complain for free.

These posts have me a bit worried, but I upgraded my Win2k box to AntiVir7 (from version 6) at least a week ago and haven't had any problems. The autoupdate isn't perfect-probably due to their overloaded server-but it's better than before.

I don't run an antivirus program and never have. I do a wipe of my system a couple times a year and reinstall(XP), and before I do that I install 2 or 3 AV programs(uninstall each before installing the others) and scan my system. I've never got a virus in the 30 years I've been using personal computers...

Sounds like you are pretty lucky. But I don't understand why you go through all that extra work of the scans/wipe/reinstall a couple of times per year. Since I've moved my systems to Win2k or XP I've only had to reinstall maybe once every two years, and that's with my kids downloading and installing who knows what from who knows where.

To everyone their own methods, I guess.

I've had a few infections, mostly trojans.

A lot of people share your sentiments, however it only takes once of getting burned and you become a believer. Most viruses today are less destructive than they were a decade ago. Today, virus writers see the logic in gaining control over your pc as opposed to destroying everything on it. However, if you've been using computers as long as you say you have, that means you should have seen the problems some of them used to cause.

If all that's needed to protect myself from something that's liable to wipe out all 8000+ of my family photos is a small piece of generally unintrusive software, and it can be used free of charge, I see no reason not to run it.

I'm curious though, what you're running that the few CPU cycles a virus scanner steals would hinder? I'm a hardcore gamer (read 3hrs+ per night 7 nights per week) and I don't have any issues with them. If you're running something that's that processor intensive, why not just dual boot to a clean XP install for that app, then reboot back into the daily instance for email, surfing, etc. (daily) duties? Drive space is extemely cheap now days, so that's not a reason not to dual boot anymore.

Well ok I was kidding, but until about 3-4 years I did not run resident AV software bc until recently the only way to get a virus was by opening an executable or file that had macros. I would manually scan new files I was going to open, which might number 1 a day.. I never used Outlook Express, so I was generally immune, but then browsers started to become vulnerable and so forth. It finally reached a point where getting infected could happen just by getting "near" something and even the best of us were vulnerable without a resident scanner.

Of course another option was to do risky stuff in a virtual machine, but that was just way too geeky, even though I was geeky enough to do it..

oh, and by the "extra work" I was implying I did all those scans before a reinstall to check if I had gotten any viruses..just to see, but it was a made up story so ignore it.

Anyone know how to get rid of the antivir option when right clicking on files?
