bump for the best free av software (and one of the better av software overall). i currently use symantec since it was provided for free from my school, but i always suggest avg on friends who are looking for a good av software.

I've used alot of different AV products, Norton, McAffee, Avast, AVG, NOD32, Etrust....and out of all of them, AVG and NOD32 are tied for my top spot. AVG doesn't hot system resources, it's FREE, and although in the past, people have knocked AVG for it's low detection rate, from what i can see, it's been getting 100% on vb bulletin tests, etc....HOT HOT HOT!! =)

Correct me if I am wrong, but Antivir does not do virus dat updates automagically ? Other than that, I do like it ... but only for a PC that has a competent user that knows enough to do their AV updates and Windows Updates on a regular schedule.

AVG just works very well for me ... no problems updating and the programs footprint is much easier on a lower end PC than McAfee or Symantec.

Avast has somehow blown up twice on my spare box .. I run it in conjunction with McAfee (yea, I know ... thats not a good thing) but just this weekend I noticed the icon was gone. Trying to run it caused an error so I once again reloaded it. Not very reliable an AV program, at least on my particular hardware.

Panda Platinum is my favorite, as it also has a passable firewall built into it. I thought it was free for the life of the product but have read recent threads indicating it is only valid for use for one year.

I am using Kaspersky for my own computer... but using AVG for all other computers. How is this better than version 6? Did they upgrade the interface?

Been using AVG for awhile now....Can't beat the price.

As far as the last post....They did change the interface somewhat and included some more features.

I like the virus on the fly box....Always get virus elert's when I check my email....This new version gives a option to delete it now without a scan

I'm not sure where people saying its a hog are getting that. It has a neglible footprint for me. It takes it a second to startup on boot, but after that I don't even know its there...including in games.

Ive tried most all the antivirus software over the years and for average home use AVG is the best (and free!). Though I prefer nod32 for a bunch of networked machines or a business. Thanks for the heads up I assumed automatic updates would inform the user of new version.

I installed v7 and I can't get it to connect to my e-mail server unless I disable the e-mail scanner plugin. Using XP SP2 and OE.

I take it it's trying to check e-mail on the server which is adelphia.net.

Any ideas?

I have been using AVG for over a year now. It catches everything IMO.

AVG combined with Stinger from McAfee has allowed me to rid any system of infections, (knocks on wood)
