I have been using AVG 6 for a few years and have liked it until about a month ago, and had like a worm and some other virus thing that fouled me up that it never found, but another free online scanner did. I upgraded to this new 7 on one box and have the old 6 on the other wondering if they are going to make us all pay for good protection now.....

Say what? You posted a link to the "AVS Forum" which has nothing to do with AVG.

I upgraded to the new version and I've had no problems.

This thread really needs to be locked. This is NOT a hot deal. AVG Free Edition is free, so there is nothing hot about it. You can get it for free at any time. OP, find a hot deal then post it, otherwise, don't bother. How about I start several threads about each of the free e-mail accounts you can make...Hotmail, Yahoo, etc?

It's obviously not a hot deal to you but it is for me.
You may like paying for anti-virus software.
You may like paying a annual fee to keep your anti-virus software up to date.

Not me.

Thanks. This is hot!

Was running NAV 2004, and lost a partition it was running on.
Tried reinstalling NAV 2004 and it would not reinstall. Went to Symantec's web site and ran their "cleaners" and manual uninstall. Still could not install NAV 2004 or 2005.

Going to give AVG a shot.

Careful with NAV 2004: I lost all my data last year trying to uninstall 2004. There are so many
hidden files it would take a pro to find them all (i.e. in msconfig, registry, AppLog especially,
shared files, etc. etc., it's everywhere}. Uninstalling 2004 (or trying to) is a nightmare.

If you install AVG over the remnants of 2004 be very careful, AVG still "sees" NAV 2004. Let us
know if you can run AVG successfully. Also, use the link I posted for the grisoft AVG forum since
several ver. 7 installers have had problems with NAV 2004 under AVG. NAV 2004 is poison. Once it's
on your system it doesn't go away no matter what you do...

Actually, I use AVG Free Edition myself. So your theories are irrelevant. This isn't hot. I already knew about this software.

Actually, it is your opinions that are irrelevant. Not everyone knows about AVG and I am quite sure they would appreciate info about this free anti-virus software.

I also switched to Antivir. I was using AVG but after the upgrade my e-mail was blocked on 3 of my machines. I always manually updated the protection on AVG so the lack of a good auto-update feature with the Antivir is not such an issue. After the first installation with the Antivir a worm was detected that Avg and Norton had missed.

RE:"After the first installation with the Antivir a worm was detected that Avg and Norton had missed."

Ever wonder is some of these programs "plant a virus, worrm or trojan" to make THEIR program look like it found something the last program you used didn't.

It's very suspicious when they find something the first time you use their program and the only reference you can find to that virus happens to be on THEIR website.

Hummm

Happened too many times to me.

Hot Deal for me...Norton has been a pain in the butt and I was looking to replace it.
How many times have you seen hot deals with free email accounts? Theres probably hundreds of different free email services out there. How many free anti-virus programs do you see out there that actually work well?

Anti-virus programs are essential. Thanks for the deal...I've heard of it before myself but it's a good reminder once in a while. I wouldn't have even thought to try it out until I saw the positive response from others here. Now time to try it out on my laptop.

I switched to 7.0 from 6 when AVG 7 was still in beta testing I have had very good luck with it until lately it hasn't been updating properly but for a free AV solution it's not bad.
