Thanks.

download the firmware, note where you save it. go to your setting homepage for your router. then go to the firmware tab and browse for the firmware you downloaded. if you need more than that, maybe you dont really need the firmware? it is pretty simple to update

Should I disable ssid broadcast? Will the wireless cards still be able to find the router?

Yes, most cards should have no problem with a disabled SSID Broadcast, but some may. You can just try it and see. If you suddenly can't connect anymore even though you've manually enetered all your router info correctly, then your network card can't handle a hidden SSID.

I would also like to know the answer to this one... I tried this on 5.x (forget the exact version), and I couldn't get it to work. I've heard that ti was easier on 4.x, since they changed the way bridging worked... I had also heard that they were hoping to 'fix' this again in the next major release (aka 6.x).

How is this mode different from LAN mode, which works fine? LAN mode rebroadcasts, and allows others to connect to it (and then it repeats the signals to the next wireless hub down the line to the router), and client mode only repeats a wired signal? What are the differences?

Are you thinking of WDS mode? If so, the problem with this is that the bandwidth is halved for each wireless 'bridge'... which is OK (better than nothing), but ideally I'd like to have a full-speed point-to-point wireless bridge.

Maybe I should try again with the latest firmware?

It isn't hard to set up the access restrictions, just give it a profile name, time, and that is pretty much it.

I want to set it up so that the Internet is shut off between 9pm and 6am for every computer except for the laptop, which is what I use to configure the router. I've been playing with Access Restrictions settings without much luck. I set two policies: a Nightly timer and a Morning timer. I tried to set it as one, from 9pm - 6am, but it said I couldn't have a bigger number on the end, so I cut it in half from 9pm - 11:55pm (11:55pm was the latest) and then a second policy from 12am - 6am. Kinda lame but oh well. I then added my laptop's mac address to the list of PCs that were allowed Internet access during those times. However, when I tested it out on one of my wireless desktops, it was able to connect and surf just fine. Did I set it wrong?

Should I disable ssid broadcast? Will the wireless cards still be able to find the router?

Also, I hate having unnecessary icons on my system tray. When the ethernet is disconnected, I get an icon that shows an X to tell me it's disconnected. I've gone into Network Connections and unchecked "Show icon in notification area when connected" and "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity", but it's still there. The only was I can get rid of it is by disabling the lan adapter in Network Connections. Any other fixes for this?
http://192.168.1.1/help/HFilters.asp

In your case, you can disable via MAC, (and allow access to only certain MACs). I don't bother with SSID, but as mentioned above, some cards don't like that.
Or, if you limit the # of clients your DHCP puts out, you can filter out by IP range, excluding your laptops IP (assuming it is the first one that gets allocated), then limit the others.
On my system, 192.168.20.1 is the main, and the clients are in the range of 192-168.20.2-3. I only allow 3 clients, and I use the limit access to their MACs also. It just depends how far you want to take this.

It is still free (as it has to be due to GPL) if you know where to look. Never sure what you get but hey don't know for sure from sve either.

Read some really nasty things about Sve. Search the web read what you find... makes you go hmmmm.

Peace,

Ok....I just read the whole thread. I need help flashing my wrt54gs. I've d/l these WRT54G.Sveasoft.Firmware.Alchemy_6rc5_by_TheIndividual.zip file. Can anyone tell me if this is the correct firmware for the GS model? Also what precaution should I take prior and after the update. Any help will be much appreciated.

HKSturboKID, yes sveasoft unified wrt54g and wrt54gs model firmwares so its the same. before flashing it is recommended to reset all settings to default by holding the small reset button for ten seconds or see if there is a 'reset to defaults' option at the administration tab. and its recommended to reset to default settings after the flash as well.

i've never had to do this before, but started to do it anyway after i read about it as a precaution.

Thanks for the tip SleepWalkerX.

I was reading the forum on Sveasoft and realize that the WRT54GS that i have have the is the new version which is 1.1. So far only Alchemy_6rc will work on it and which is not a public release yet. So I'll probably hold off on it. Unless anyone has any sugguestions.

Thanks.

they could run a small network wireless...obviously hardwired, there are only 4 ports...but wirelessy, I have had 15 computers attached, and that is just in my apartment...some people are running chilli spots off of htem. So yes, 20 - 50 shouldn't be a problem...but space wise you might want 2.

Hope you got a good connection to hook up 50 machines, and they have good wireless NICs. I suppose your best bet is to get it from a place you can do a easy return on it if doesn't meet your needs.

No, I mean client mode. WDS is different, and requires 2 WRT54G routers with the exact same firmware.

Client mode just effectively turns the router into a bridge (on any wireless network)- useful for hooking up a PS2 or XBox to a wireless network.

I should have just bought a bridge....

Ok, I understand now.

And yes, I should have just bought a new bridge too (my old DWL-810+ died/acts sporadicly).

Have you ever had any luck getting the WRT54G to act as a bridge?

WDS doesn't require to two WRT54Gs with identical firmware - I'm WDS'd to my Buffalo router right now, using the Buffalo's stock firmware (rather than a Satori replacement).

If you have a Sam's Club membership, they're $49 OTD without messing with rebates.

$49.99 after 1x $10 rebate at Radio Shack now for people who don't have Sams memberships. I already have a GS but think I might pick up a G for $50 (plus I know an employee who can get another 25% off).

How's the QoS on this? I read the entire thread and noticed that it had issues. I have the same situation where BT will monopolize my house's bandwidth, so I'd like to set that low. I also have a Voicepulse voip box that I'd like to set high.

its alright. if you set bit torrent to low (bulk priority) it'll go very slowly. i actually have mine set to high (express priority). you can set priority by mac address, ip address, and ethernet port so that might be fun.

Staples has the WRT54G for $49.99 and WRT54GS $69.94 after rebate. Don't forget to use the $10 or $15 coupon that's floating around.
