How's the reliability/stability of the router after the hacks? I want to use QoS.
Darn linksys! They're going in the wrong direction. The device needs more power not less.Originally posted by: mscdex0
Just a heads up for you all thinking about buying a new WRT54G and for everyone else: Here's an interesting article about the recent hardware revisions of the WRT54G.

What do you mean modify? If you mean change the source code, sure, but you have to recompile it. If you mean change settings without rebooting, many you can, it just depends on what settings they are.
Sveasoft the "brand" if you will of one 3rd party firmware. Alchemy and talisman are versions. Think windows XP and windows vista. Alchemy is free, talisman requires payment of a support fee.
I use alchemy myself, I dont want to mess with something that works great for me so I haven't tried talisman or anything.
the ddwrt 3rd party firmware someone mentioned is getting increasingly popular. Someday maybe I'll check it out. Anyone know a feature list for it?

doh, freeman had some compelling features, like being able to set some ips as static and still use dhcp..but router acted strange..kept reconnecting. so ddwrt it is

how did u do that? i dont see the setting
and i meant static ip linked to mac address of the pcs on the network, like a partial dhcp only type deal, not the static ip from the isp. the buggy freeman had these exceptions

That feature is also in v22 release. Was using v22 release until recently when the v23 final release came out on xmas day. But if you haven't flashed to the v23 final yet, I would recommend upgrading anyway. It's so much faster and the interface looks better too. Can't wait for the v24 release with the multipe virtual SSID's feature.
