Yes, and the easiest way is the web interface. Click upgrade firmware and point to a file and bang its done. Its best to reset the router after you do this to make sure settings aren't hanging around to mess something up. There's a procedure that describes this in the documentation link on first post.

Well my WRT54g just arrived. I immediantly flashed it to Satori 4.0 and everything works wonderfully along with a plethora of new features. Now I just need to get another PRO/Wireless 2200BG so my features are not limited by this Netgear MA401.

Thank you devistater for alerting me to this firmware.

wow im gonna go get this router.

should i go with the GS model? i am already converted to all wireless G devices save for one laptop. they are non-linksys (built in wireless G on Dell latitude, MS wireless G XBOX bridge, etc), would GS get me speedbooster capabilities or can i buy a G to make it work like a GS?

Just a note, I was unable to access two if my machines (wired) via remote desktop sharing or file sharing from my laptop (wireless) after upgrading to this firmware. Granted I don't know if I needed to enable something but after upgrading back to the linksys firmware, it worked fine.

WDS was a PITA to setup. EVERY guide I could find was related to way early versions of firmware.

I'm finally setup with two wrt54g's, setup as a bridge using wds.

I've yet to check if actual wireless still works.

WPA doesn't currently work... since I live in an apt complex that sucks... I spose wep will have to do.

okay wep, and wireless works. I have both AP's set to the same SSID, and same wep key. I wonder which AP I'm currently connected to. So far so good. Hopefully everything continues to work

Can somebody tell me how difficult is this to program? I am moderately good with computers but don't know anything about networking.

I was undecided between the Linksys WRT54G and D-Link 624. This post sounds like it is significant but I can't say that I fully understand the implications of this free sveasoft firmware.

Can somebody educate me?

Thanks

Anthony

Basically it adds a whole new feature list. Reading the original post again will shed some light on this.

Depends on what you want to do with it I say. Many of the added features are pretty easy to use. However, being linux based...it lets you add your own stuff. And that is slightly harder to do. They have pretty good documentation on their website. Upgrading to their firmware, however, is easy enough. Same as upgrading to the next version of their own firmware.

I have this router. I've been thinking about upgrading. The only thing that is stopping me is the fact that I don't know what any of the features mean, and the uses/benefits associated with them. I wish I knew more about this stuff so I could make a firmware upgrade decision but I don't.

Can somebody explain how upgrading the firmware increases the power and signal?

It seems stupid that the manufacturer of the linksys would not automatically
use the setting which offers the highest/most powerful signal by default.

How is it that a simple firmware upgrade can boast 100-500% increases?

Did I understand this correctly?

Thanks

Anthony

boo, sveasoft sucks... they locked out all non-subscribers to their forum so that its not possible to see what's going on with development or even easily find the free satori firmware anymore. they are really skirting the GPL now, taking the free linux code in the WRT54g and making a profit off their upgraded firmware for it.

This has been discussed before quite a bit - they're well within their rights, just like Red Hat is within their rights to do *exactly* the same thing with their Linux product. No difference. And it's still easy to find the latest free bits and download them.

Can this router take a wireless signal and then route it through the 10/100 ports? My school has a wireless network and I'd love to just be able to use my onboard LAN on my PC. So, what I'm asking is, does the linksys router have the ability to acquire an IP address through the wireless antenna and then route it through to the LAN ports? If so, I'm gonna jump on this!

I'm currently looking for a bridging setup for my condo...I need to get my network from my back (computer) room to my living room for XBOX, HTPC, etc. I currentl have 1 802.11b router providing wireless access for my laptop. Just last week I bought a WRT54G to replace it. My intent was to also get a wireless bridge for the living room, but the Linksys one is $180. If this firmware will let the WRT54G work in a bridge mode, can I still have wireless access for my laptop? Or, does it have to do one thing or the other? If that's the case, then I'd need 3 of these routers, and 3x$60 is the same as just getting the bridge, and that setup might be a little easier, although I wouldn't mind being able to increase the output of this thing. I also just got Vonage so I'm interested in how well that works behind this router.

Just got this router. I had my vontage already set to a static IP outside of the dynamic range on my previous router (a SMC vbr) yet I still had to forward ports to get it to work. Only problem is that sucky SMC router doesnt allow port forwarding in ranges very well so I ditched it for this one with sveasoft. Range is MUCH better (I only cranked it up to 48 strength from 24 base). Works fine with vonage but I havent played with the QOS on the router yet.

Also Its my understanding that if you set one of these to client mode with the sveasoft firmware that it acts just like a bridge (turn of DHCP of course too and firewall). You can also have it act like a repeater if you want. I havent done this yet (only have one) but well see.

But do you know if it's in client mode (bridging) if it will still be able to connect to wireless clients, like a laptop? Or, can it just be working as a bridge with another access point? I know this is not the linksys firmware, but on their site if you're using their firmware for their APs if you're in client mode it cannot communicate directly with any other wireless clients.

You actually had to forward ports to get vonage working? I didn't have to and my vonage box works fine.
