Just got this router. I had my vontage already set to a static IP outside of the dynamic range on my previous router (a SMC vbr) yet I still had to forward ports to get it to work. Only problem is that sucky SMC router doesnt allow port forwarding in ranges very well so I ditched it for this one with sveasoft. Range is MUCH better (I only cranked it up to 48 strength from 24 base). Works fine with vonage but I havent played with the QOS on the router yet.

Also Its my understanding that if you set one of these to client mode with the sveasoft firmware that it acts just like a bridge (turn of DHCP of course too and firewall). You can also have it act like a repeater if you want. I havent done this yet (only have one) but well see.

You actually had to forward ports to get vonage working? I didn't have to and my vonage box works fine.

You shouldn't HAVE to forward ports to get it to work, I think they recommend it to cut down on potential problems. But, their recommended setup is to have the Vonage box sitting in front of your router, which makes the router worthless, because then it's just acting like a gateway.

With this router (linksys) I don't have to forward ports. With my old one I did. If I had the firewall enabled on it I could call out fine and even have my vonage phone ring... But previously unless I forwarded ports I would be unable to be heard (despite teh fact I could hear the person calling) with vonage. With this linksys I dont have to forward anything worlks fine....

As to the question about still being able to be used as a wireless transmitter I think you can set it in WDS which is essentially a repeater mode and have two routers broadcast a wireless signal but I havent done it myself. There are THREE modes you can use as I understand it which are essentually a normal router mode, a bridge mode and a repeater type mode....

now that sveasoft is not free anymore, where is a good place to download Satori v4?

I got it from linksysinfo. is this a safe place for the authentic sveasoft satori v4?

Also, i have done this upgrade and it seem to take it. But I cannot figure out how to do static IP by MAC assignment. There are no documenation anywhere on sveasoft.

Could someone post the firmware so that I can download it? The sweasoft site is no longer free.

Alchemy v5.1 available for download here - as all of Sveasoft's firmware is subject to the GPL you are free to redistribute whatever files Sveasoft gives you, provided that you also make the source code available. Also a good read about the whole controversy surrounding Sveasoft at the moment.

Mods, if the Alchemy link is not allowed please feel free to edit it out of my post and accept my sincere apologies. Thanks!

Interesting....

If they can do PIX-like ACLs and sub-interface and VLAN switch port assignment, oh, now that would be awesome... A real layer 3 DMZ for $60!

Fry's bay area has this router for $59.99-$10 rebate= $49.99. This firmware rocks. Was about to return this router and the g card because of a slow wireless connection to the pc in the kitchen but this firmware just fixed that. Speed jumping from 11-54mb instead of 1-24mb with the default firmware. Sweet!

Maybe unplug your router for 15 seconds. My wireless basic settings : "G-only", broadcast off, channel 8. My wireless advanced settings are all on default. Try different things.

Does anyone have the WRT54GS and play Civilization 3? I can't get the router to allow me to host a game or even join a game no matter what ports I have open. I even put the computer I was playing on, into the DMZ and still could not play. I have to plug the cable modem directly into the computer to get it to work. Do you think that the new firmware would solve my problem?

I don't play Civ3 but I do play "Soldiers: Heroes of WW2" and I host the game on my system behind my WRT54G. I have 2 UDP ports open and it works fine. Didn't try without the ports open though.

Oh, I'm using the Satori 4.0 firmware.

It seems stupid that the manufacturer of the linksys would not automatically
use the setting which offers the highest/most powerful signal by default.

How is it that a simple firmware upgrade can boast 100-500% increases?

Did I understand this correctly?

Thanks

Anthony

How safe is it to boost the wireless strength? From what I understand, the signal is essentially in the microwave range and I would think it would be best to set it at the lowest level possible while getting good transfer speed to avoid damage to our living cells.

Wow, nice. I bought the WRT54GS yesterday without knowing about this. I got a decent deal at Fry's too. It was listed at $99.99, but when the cashier ring it up, it was $79.99.

Has anyone here tried the Static DHCP setting for the Satori 4 firmware? The DHCPd setting under admin is how you do this, correct? I keep trying this and it tells me my settings are invalid. Can someone please post an acceptable sample line? Thanks.

While I am at it, has anyone tried using the DNS Masq setting? Will this improve performance on a small home network (4-5 comps)?

What a shame. I just found this thread and 2 days ago I went to BB and got a Netgear G at $30 AMIRs. I just may return as I have yet to open the cellophane.

Thanks, that worked. I was previously using a beta5 version and nothing worked. I guess I jumped to the conclusion 4 didn't work also after 1 error.
