Just got this router. I had my vontage already set to a static IP outside of the dynamic range on my previous router (a SMC vbr) yet I still had to forward ports to get it to work. Only problem is that sucky SMC router doesnt allow port forwarding in ranges very well so I ditched it for this one with sveasoft. Range is MUCH better (I only cranked it up to 48 strength from 24 base). Works fine with vonage but I havent played with the QOS on the router yet.
Also Its my understanding that if you set one of these to client mode with the sveasoft firmware that it acts just like a bridge (turn of DHCP of course too and firewall). You can also have it act like a repeater if you want. I havent done this yet (only have one) but well see.
You actually had to forward ports to get vonage working? I didn't have to and my vonage box works fine.
You shouldn't HAVE to forward ports to get it to work, I think they recommend it to cut down on potential problems. But, their recommended setup is to have the Vonage box sitting in front of your router, which makes the router worthless, because then it's just acting like a gateway.
