Can anyone help me setup the router for just wired acess? I am using my netgear rp114 router just fine right now.

When I hook up the linksys I do not get an IP from my isp. I am using comcast in socal. I have turned off wireless in the setup. I flashed to the alchemy 6rc1 and neither that nor the default firmware worked. The DHCP for the network works (my comp shows up as 192.168.1.101) but I do not get an ip from comcast.

I'm at a loss, it should just work right with DHCP correct? My netgear does it just fine but the linksys doesn't get a thing. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere? I've tried turning on and off different settings and I get no IP at all.

If you just switched out the router you need to unplug your modem an d reboot it before it will send a new ip to you new router.

Hardware revisions rather than firmware revisions. Also, any way to differentiate between them while looking at an unopened box at the store, or even better, a way to distinguish if I order one online? Thanks.

This might help out. Link

Or this. Link

Great. That's exactly what I was looking for. Do you know if the most recent versions are the most desirable ones? I'd assume that to be the case, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Cisco Jr. tried to lock things down more in newer versions.

Also, do you know if the replacement firmwares also work with the version of this router that is for use with Vonage? I was thinking about getting Vonage anyway, so if it would still work, I think I'll probably go get one of these.

Thanks a lot for the information.

OK, so if this is supposed to be GPL software, then where is the direct download link?

I can't find a download link anywhere on there site, and I don't want to pay to register to get to the "free" software.

Seems to me like the Sveasoft guys are violating the GPL as much as Linksys were.

I might be interested in the WRTG54S, but I'd prefer 108Mbps oh and Linux support for the WPC54GS cards....

Does anyone know of any G+ 108Mbps cards that work with Linux - or even a SpeedBooster G card?

This post could fall under the "moron" category but i have to ask.

I replaced my only sony 900 Mhz phones and have bought two different 5.8 mhz phones,
panasonic (which I returned) and now motorola.

They all suffer from static, broken/intermittent connection, short range (20-30feet) etc....
and I don't know what to do.

These are supposed to be the best but something is causing problems.

My house was built in 1940 and has solid walls but I have never had a problem with phones.

Could the router be causing the problems?

Has anybody had any similar problems?

Any suggestions on what phone to get/buy?

Money is no object as I am tired of not having several working phones....

Thanks

Anthony

atwnsw,

A few years back I had a top-of-the-line Sony 900 Mhz cordless phone. With aluminum siding and a two-story house, I had static and problems all over. Once I went to a Panasonic 2.4 Gighertz phones, I've not had problems, with any of the SMC, Netgear or D-link wireless routers I have used.

Do you have static with your normal wired phones? After all, the wireless base units plug into the home line

I unplugged both the linksys router and belkin print server and still have HIGH static on the cordless phones.

My non-cordless phone has always worked perfectly and has never had static.

I don't know what else could cause this extreme problem unless my neighbors....?

Is there anything else in the house that can cause problems on a 5.8mhz cordless phone?

atwnsw, i would make sure that the filters for your DSL are installed on your telephone lines. Also, try walking outside with both the phone base and receiver. If you still get static outside, but the phone is still plugged into your telephone jacks, it would be obvious that it is the structure of your house and not the lines.

LMK what the result is, and good luck

Routers run 2.4 GHz.

5.8 GHz interference? Could be a microwave oven with a leaky seal. (or even with an OK seal, really). Could be your neighbors microwave, actually.

Not sure, but it's not your wireless router.

My microwave oven is very old but can it cause interference with the phone if the microwave isn't on?

I rarely use it...

That is scary if it is true...

your microwave won't cause interference if it isn't on, because it is not emitting any waves. You must have something running interference in that frequency. You live by an airport or anything? Or a big factory in teh neighborhood?

Well, I bought 2 uniden 900mhz phones and will be trying them shortly.

Keep you posted.

As far as interference, I live in a residential neighborhood (no airports, factories, etc...)

So theoretically you could add more stuff to the firmware. However, no one has done this yet that I know of, almost all 3rd party firmware that's released will work fine on either G or GS.

as of now, 12/19/04, is this still true, or has the firmware + addon modules require the more abundant internal memory that the GS offers? I have the wrt original model, and am interested in picking up either the version 2.0 wrt54g or the gs.

you would rather it be free for us and no one else? This is definitely a hot deal as it adds functionality to your $50 router that you would expect to pay quite a bit more for. It's like flashing your regular ati card into a firegl or something for graphics work. A lot of bang in terms of functionality for not so much buck.

Someone please post a sub $20 link on the 54GS, now that would be a hot deal to go with this firmware!

CompUSA just had the Motorola WR850G for $10 after rebates but it's unlikely linksys will go that low. The motorola is based alsmost the same ahrdware and software as the linksys, but I don't know of any that actually succeeded in running the sveasoft software in the Motorola.
Note that a similar project, openWRT (openWRT.org) runs both on th elinksys and the motorola. It'smodular (pick and choose the features you want) but that makes it more complicated to install/use.

I heard that the firmware does work in Motorola WR850g router, but it requires opening the box and do hardware hacking using wires to upload codes to the router. You can't do it using the user interface. I bought the combo with router, notebook card and pci card. The router sucks. It has overload problem, specially with the newest firmware. It doesn't even work with the SB5100 modem with the second latest version. I am just too lazy to do hardware probing, so I just return the whole thing.

Does anyone know if i would be able to use this in my setup....

Currently have a Microsoft Wireless-G Router.....

Could i use the Linksys WRT54G router, update the firmware, then use it as a wireless bridge to connect my xbox to my existing wireless network?
