Reading the forums on Sveasoft, it looks like the firmware will run on the Buffalo WBR2-G54. Picked one up during the outpost deal for 12.99 after rebate. At that price, its worth the risk to see if it works!

For those of you asking where to download I guess you missed this post above:

Alchemy v5.1 available for download here - as all of Sveasoft's firmware is subject to the GPL you are free to redistribute whatever files Sveasoft gives you, provided that you also make the source code available. Also a good read about the whole controversy surrounding Sveasoft at the moment.

Mods, if the Alchemy link is not allowed please feel free to edit it out of my post and accept my sincere apologies. Thanks!

I tried Alchemy v5.1 beta and had a few problems with it so I went back to Satori V4.

Overall, for ease of use and functions I actually use I think I like my old DLink 614+ better. First, static DHCP support was easier to use. Second, the 614+ supported port forwarding to different ports (i.e. port 3390 to 3389 of destination computer). I still cant get this router to update my dyndns info.

I bought a WRT54G router yesterday and am very happy with the stock Linksys firmware. I'm looking for that one killer reason to switch to the Sveasoft version but haven't found it. Other than the desire to tinker, what were the main reasons you guys switched to Sveasoft?

The sveasoft firmware *is* still free. You just download it from http://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php now instead of their main site. Only the stable, public releases are free/GPL'd I think. The Satori line is the stable one right now and the Alchemy is the prerelease/unstable tree that is only available legally to subscribers.

If you don't need the features of the sveasoft firmware you probably don't want to bother running it but, for me the traffic shaping and vpn server did it for me. Being able to change the output power is cool, as is SSHing in to the router.

NO NO NO NO NO.

ALL Sveasoft firmware is under the GPL. All of it is available for free, and ALL of it is available LEGALLY. They are all modifications of GPL Linksys firmware. There is no way they can NOT be GPL'd.

Sveasoft charge $20 for their subscription, which gives access to the firmware. They're entitled to do this under the GPL. (Although they aren't distributing the source of various firmwares, which IS a GPL violation.)

However, any subscriber can re-distribute this to whoever they want, and can do so legally.

Sveasoft have attempted to stop this by not distributing the source (a GPL violation) so that people can't compile their own, known clean binaries, as well as claiming that the binaries leaked are sabotaged and phone home, fry your router, kill your dog, whatever. This is false.

MD5 sums were posted showing that the firmwares were identical, but those posts seemed to disappear (and the person who posted the md5sum found their subscription terminated.)

Alchemy and Satori are both GPL and available legally for free, whether Sveasoft like it or not.

Once again, mirrors and comments are available here

And an article about Sveasoft, the GPL, and James Ewing's unethical, immmoral, and illegal tactics:

For me, Iptables (firewall) was the main reason. Just being able to get in to the Linux shell is great. PPTP sever, lots of other stuff.

I have nothing but good things to say about this router, especially the SpeedBooster model. This Router will boost your 802.11g network even WITHOUT speedbooster adapters! Unlike Netgear's marketed "108MBps" Super-G and D-Link's advertised "108MBps", you need to buy their associated PC Card, PCI adapter in order to fully utilize the potential speeds. SpeedBooster (by Broadcom) technology doens't require you to purchase a Speedbooster equipped PC Card or PCI/USB adapter to increase network speeds.

Now, time to upgrade and see how much more powerful this router can do!

Thanks for the info.

If it is true(I believe it is), James is really a despicable figure.

I don't think he had to do it for free, but using all the illegal tactics to threaten and scare people off are really crossing the line. I have used GPL source code to customize the GPL software for my own use and really appreciate and respect the effort people put in to make it happen. I will never pass anything I customized off as my own.

Thanks for the info!

Does this firmware allow the WRT54G to go above 54mbps with normal 802.11G adapters? or is that still only possible with the GS model?

the wrt54g can't go beyond 54mbps, but the firmware can strengthen your connection by allowing you to change the mW. only the wrt54gs can allow you have 108mbps.

the new site that has alchemy firmware - http://wrt54g.thermoman.de/

inofficial forum for discussion - http://forum.bsr-clan.de/index.php?c=5

just flashed to 5.3 with my v2 wrt54g and it works great. i just hope you'll be able to use the qos by port in the future instead of selecting bit-torrent or http as the service. i can't wait for captive portal also. btw did they fix the thing where qos would throw away %20 of the bandwidth?

yup, using alchemy here too.
amusing it unlocks more spectrum, up to chan 14. too bad my network card doesn't use that channel i bet. (haven't tried). wifi getting crowded. and stupid neihbors don't always know only 1/5/11 are totally separate channels. damn straddlers.

what power output did u set your router to? mines at 60mw right now. i got drop outs and reoconnects before, and it sorta seems better now. still haven't tested wireless much. but yea, pretty damn chock full of features. the original firmware did seem a tad light

so if i get this right, the qos lets you set priorities for types of data? does it work? would be nice if i could transfer stuff without destroying my ability to surf. damn 128kbs upload.

holy moly!

just read those slashdotted articles

James Ewing isn't getting a penny out of me, and I'll be sure to bad-mouth him every chance I get

edit: looks like he's getting so much bad press that he's totally cut-off reading/posting to their forums unless you cough up $20. It wasn't that way a month or so ago....
