has anyone seen "The Individual's" Journal on Slashdot.org? He's done a lot of work like this to make a version like this free.

(on a related note) Has anyone bridged the WRT54G w/ the Netgear WTG624?

TIA!

didn't see anything about the best wireless b/g adapters to get. Bascially i'm looking for anything with good range which i guess means high power ouput (someone mentioned getting a 200mW one). usb is preferred

best adapters? What do you mean adapaters? What are yo u trying to adapt? high ouput in mW is good, but higher db's is better!

Jsut get the WRT54G. You won't notice any difference betwen G and GS especially after the Alchemy or Satori firmwares.

Do you think all the ISPs in front of you will make port 6881 a higher priority port?

If you have a Sam's Club membership, they're $49 OTD without messing with rebates.

Interpreting your question to me means, how do you run a wireless network and prevent yourself from being hacked. If you want 100% security consider a few of these things:
a. use WPA for wireless security, not WEP. WEP is cracked.
b. Don't broadcast your SSID, and change it from 'linksys' to something else
c. Consider using MAC-filtering to only allow your MAC addresses on the network
d. Make your wireless strength as weak as possible, so that it works well in your house but not beyond your walls. don't arbitrarily go for strongest signal as that extends your reach.
e. Change your router login password to something other than 'admin'
There may be a few other tips but that is my quick summary.[/L]

There is no such thing as "100% security" for wireless. As of right now the best possible thing for "99.99% security" is WPA-Enterprise (RADIUS) combined with AES encryption, until it's cracked that is.

Although I must admit that I really like WPA's benefits over WEP. On my network I use WPA-PSK with AES encryption and I have had no more hackers for months with using the same key.

For some people it can make a difference. On the sveasoft forums I have seen people who use QoS quite successfully to manage HTTP, VoIP and BitTorrent traffic so that VoIP still works.

Yeah I tried the reset.
Ended up fixing it by opening it and forcing the chip to do a hard reflash. That trick rocks.

Even though it voids your warranty.

Does anyone know if there are any major differences between the different versions of this router? I don't mean WRT54G vs. WRT54GS; I mean v2.0 or v2.2 or whatever. Hardware revisions rather than firmware revisions. Also, any way to differentiate between them while looking at an unopened box at the store, or even better, a way to distinguish if I order one online? Thanks.

Basically the GS has twice the ROM and RAM. Otherwise they work the same and support the same features.

eh? i'm just giving an example. right now i'm using port 5050 for my bt traffic cause i don't want to use the default ports and i had to select the "Yahoo Messenger" service from within my router as a different priority (express) because i actually have to select qos by service and not port.

i'm not talking about isps. i'm talking about the qos within the firmware. i swear i heard this can be done. can't you set qos by port and not service like FTP, Counter-Strike, HTTP, eDonkey?

I can't speak for the firmware directly (or eDonkey whatever that is), but the services listed above just use layer 4 ports.

Check out the

Seattle Wireless Client Page. It has the stats on many, if not most of the, adaptors/clients, out there. There are favorites like the SMC, but that is a lot of personal preferance.

i know someone asked a question on an issue that i just encountered (and solved). by default (in satori at least), there's a feature turned on called loopback in the administration section. one side effect of this feature being enabled is that wireless clients will not be able to browse wired pc's resources by their computer name (you can do \\ip\resource though). the wired clients can browse the wireless, just not the other way around. wireless clients are not able to ping wired clients by name (ip works for this as well though). turning off loopback fixes this issue

In my case, I have the desktop wired directly into the router and a wirelesss laptop using a "G" card along with a "G" print server.

Please don't flame me for posting an attempt to list a suggested configuration for newbies.....

Go to 192.168.1.1

Type in "xxxx? in password (default is ?admin?).

SAVE EACH TAB AS YOU MAKE CHANGES!!!!!!!!!

SETUP
Basic Setup
Change Router Name to ?unique name?
Change Time Zone to ?Eastern?
Advanced Routing
Change Interface to ?LAN & Wireless?
WIRELESS
Basic Settings
Wireless Mode to ?AP?
Wireless Network Mode to ?G? only
Wireless Network Name to ?unique name?
Wireless Channel to ?Auto?
Wireless SSID Broadcast to ?Enable?
Mac Filter
Wireless Mac Filter to ?Enable?
Select ?Permit Only?
Edit Mac Filter List to include 2 (laptop & print server) & Save
Advanced Settings
Frame Burst to ?Enable?
Xmit Power to "84? (This is the transmit power"

ADMINISTRATION
Management
Router Password to ?xxxx?
Re-enter to confirm ?xxxx?
AP Watchdog to Disable (maybe enable)
Change to 15 seconds
Dhcpd
Change to Enable
Used Domain
Lan/Wlan

Is this a bad idea? Are there any suggested changes?

Your input in welcome and if the consensus is to delete my post, no problem.

I will delete it immediately.

Thanks

P.S. I can't take credit for knowing the changes to my setup. Somebody walked me through
the process and I wrote it down. Please don't ask me how to setup your router because I
don't know how. Again, I wrote down the settings that were given to me and thought it could
benefit the masses.....

I bought a WRT54GS awhile ago with the intentions to upgrade it to Sveasoft. I'm just getting around to it now and found this thread (sweetness!). I just have one question:

Can you disable the router's Internet connection at certain times? I want to cut off the Internet at my house from 9:00pm - 6:00am (children/time restrictions/etc.). Does Sveasoft offer a feature to do this? I noticed "AP Watchdog timer option" in the feature list, would that do it? Right now I just unplug it at 9:00pm, which is a pain because I have to redo things manually.

As for the $20, I don't mind paying somebody for their work. If this firmware turns out to be as good as everbody's said it is, I think the author should get credit for his work.

Also, I switched over to a full G network from a B/G mixed network. I noticed a definate improvement, especially in terms of speed (also connection reliability). There's a fantastic USB G adapter going for $15 on Outpost.com that I got for one of my systems; if you're looking to upgrade cheap it's a great way to go. I can dig up the link if anyone wants it.

Edit: Just discovered the "Internet Access" section under "Access Restrictions" on the stock firmware. I thought that you had to buy Parental Conrol to do that stuff, guess not. If anyone happens to know how to set it up easily please post a reply, thanks!

It isn't hard to set up the access restrictions, just give it a profile name, time, and that is pretty much it.

I want to set it up so that the Internet is shut off between 9pm and 6am for every computer except for the laptop, which is what I use to configure the router. I've been playing with Access Restrictions settings without much luck. I set two policies: a Nightly timer and a Morning timer. I tried to set it as one, from 9pm - 6am, but it said I couldn't have a bigger number on the end, so I cut it in half from 9pm - 11:55pm (11:55pm was the latest) and then a second policy from 12am - 6am. Kinda lame but oh well. I then added my laptop's mac address to the list of PCs that were allowed Internet access during those times. However, when I tested it out on one of my wireless desktops, it was able to connect and surf just fine. Did I set it wrong?

Should I disable ssid broadcast? Will the wireless cards still be able to find the router?

Also, I hate having unnecessary icons on my system tray. When the ethernet is disconnected, I get an icon that shows an X to tell me it's disconnected. I've gone into Network Connections and unchecked "Show icon in notification area when connected" and "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity", but it's still there. The only was I can get rid of it is by disabling the lan adapter in Network Connections. Any other fixes for this?

Thanks.
