Because it's a free upgrade to firmware with enhanced features. If you don't like it don't click on it. :roll:

there's lots of free software, maybe it should all be on hot deals ? already this forum is full of crap threads that's it's hard to find a real deal. I thought the whole idea of hot deals forum is to make it easy to find the hot deals ? in any case, even if you consider this a deal, now it's already a long standing situation, and not a hot new deal any more. It just takes space in the hot deals forum (usually on the front page), bumping off some real hot deals. MOVE IT OUT NOW

So maybe I am confused, does Alchemy RC5 include VPN server software or do I need something additional?

MODS / MODERATORS: please move this thread to networking as it's almost all about networking issues and not any deal. It's just hijacking space in hot deals forum.

haha hijacking space? alright whatever one post, maybe the mods can split the thread up and leave the first post because it is about "deals" the rest could probably be moved.

"dude" there is no deal here, not more than any other open source software. "New public sveasoft firmware..." blah blah blah is not a deal and does not comply with hot deals forum rules. for starters, "sveasoft" is just one of many firmwares available for this router and many other routers also have downloadable firmware for free (imagine that). And did you know linux is free, and open office, and you can download new nvidia drivers for free too. are all these hot deals to be posted in the hot deals forum ? maybe you don't understand that space is limited and people need to be able to find the real hot deals quickly listed on one of the first pages. And if some over zealous morons continue to flood the hot deals forum with their own little propietary interests than it will be the end of hot deals. That's why there are techinical forums for (software, networking, blah).

And you are contributing to it by posting in here with this! I love it! Honestly though, the only reason I posted in here was because if you go check out the networking forum when people asked about Sveasoft stuff they are usually directed to this thread and not typically in a nice way... so all users have been doing is following what others tell them to do on here.

Also, bitching and moaning about not being able to find the deals quickly in the first few pages is pretty sad. Yes its frustrating when you have to look at 10 pages worth of deals to find something worth reading but if you are jumping on my case and everyone else in this thread for something that is at least some what close to being on topic I think you are barking up the wrong tree.

As the first post in this forum states:
Unlike websites devoted to coupons, bargains and "deals," AnandTech Forums are computer oriented forums. Our Hot Deals forum is provided as a convenience to our members. That is why most popular posts are for Hot Deals for computer-related items.

Computer related, why not get on someone elses case about cologne, foot locker or KY Lube... come on man! Also, as the first post states:

No thread crapping. If the subject matter of a deal does not interest you, do not post negative comments about it, or about other members, in the thread.

Possibly the worst examples we have had of this have been in posts for free religious items, such as bibles, etc. If you want to discuss religion, or any other such non-computer topic, do it in our Off Topic forum. The discussions in that forum cover a wide range of topics, but needless flaming and rude, mean-spirited posts are not welcome there, either.

But with that said, I am also going to stop arguing with you because again, the mods here ask that we continue to talk about the Deal at hand in the thread and keep it on topic.

So I hope you can chill and get a grip and just enjoy the forums!

user1234,

You are one person out of hundreds of posts on this thread. If this thread HAD been in Networking, I probably would never have noticed it. Since it wasn't and since I look through Hot Deals all the time, I now have 3 routers with Alchemy installed and have a brand new one sitting that I bought today waiting for me to hook it up.

This firmware has let me take a ~$60 router and turn it into a router that I would have had to pay hundreds for. It's fixed a friend's problem with low signal and dropouts. It's fixed my bosses problem with getting through a cinder block wall. It's also helped me to learn more about the inners of my router(s) and more about networking.

Let's say for a moment that there was a thread that showed how to magically turn a Honda Civic into a Porche... you would say that that information wasn't a "Hot Deal"? Yes you are right that the CURRENT thread is more about funtionality, but the thread still has a beginning that introduces the deal to newbies and then educates them on the specifics. So how about this, you be willing to allow your eyes to skip over a SINGLE very useful thread that MANY people in the HOT DEALS forum believe is a hot deal in exchange for others benefitting from it. I mean, think about it... all the people that posted to this thread saw it IN the Hot Deals forum and they don't have a problem with it.... maybe the "people" have spoken!

look, I know it's a good router I have one and even posted a howto in networking for using it as a wireless bridge. But this doesn't mean this thread should be in hot deals. And it's not a matter of just one thread, it's a matter of principle becuase if you let one thread that doesn't blong into hot deals, many others can also be justified and some people will try to also post them in hot deals, so we'll end up with a huge mess - imagine all the threads from all the forums in one giant list, and people have to search for hot deals threads from this huge list. I hope you understand that this will ruin the (already heavily burdened with crap) forum and make it almost useless. And let me remind you that a deal is only when a product is being sold below it's regular price, but eere the price is free always so it's not a deal. If everyone could always turn a civic into a porche it will also cease being a deal, and what will happen is that civic will cost as much as a porche.

and for your point about finding this only cause it's here, I suggest you learn to search for information at the right place. And did you read what the previous poster said ? people go to networking, and are redirected to this hot deals thread for answers about their networking questions !!! that is stupid

That statement made no sense. Since I only learned about th firmware when I saw it on THIS forum, how was I to search for something I'd never heard of?

user1234, I believe this thread belongs in Hot Deals. I bought one of these routers way before I saw this, and I had no idea about this firmware before I saw it in Hot Deals. Since then, I have installed it on my router and love it.

I never would have seen this if it was in Networking. I mean, you say we should 'know how to search for information', but if you have no idea that something like this exists, then how do you search for it. This IS a hot deal for many users.

You compare it to new drivers for a nVidia graphics card, and no that is not a hot deal, mainly because everyone here knows nVidia release new drivers, just like Linksys does. However, Omega Drivers ARE a hot deal that many people do not know of. This falls along the same lines.

the wrt54g is all you need. the wrt54gs costs more, but has more memory which might be utilized later. i'm not sure if it'll be worth it, plus it costs like 40 bucks more, i'd just stick with the wrt54g.

Im looking at getting a new router, wireless G. Im looking at the Linksys WRT54G and a Netgear WGR614. Do the new WRT54G compatilbe with this firmware? The Netgear is about $20 cheaper, is the Linksys worth paying $49 after MIR over $29 after MIR?

I only have a laptop to hookup wirelessly, and my desktop will be wired.

Buyer beware, v2.2 and v3.0 WRT54G has been known to to have wired -> wireless transfer issues on large files where it reboots the router. Even with hacked firmware, it's still barfs.

I hunted down a v2.0 and the issue isn't present in the model I received. YMMV.

Here's an easy way to see what model you are getting from the box:

CDF0 = WRT54G v1.0 ADM6996L Chip
CDF1 = WRT54G v1.1 ADM6996L Chip
CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1 ADM6996L Chip
CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0 ADM6996L Chip
CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2 BCM5325EKQM Chip
CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0 BCM5325EKQM Chip

CGN0 = WRT54GS v1.0 ADM6996L Chip
CGN1 = WRT54GS v1.0 ADM6996L Chip
CGN2 = WRT54GS v1.1 BCM5325EKQM Chip
CGN3 = WRT54GS v1.1 BCM5325EKQM Chip

WRT54GS is a hit or miss, seems 1.1 has more issues than 1.0 in regards to the large file transfer issue.

I have a v2.2 WRT54g, and have transferred very large files across the network with no problem transferring wired -> wireless. So I don't think the issue exists with all routers 2.2 and up.

I have a V3 and havent had problems yet.

Monkeyboy, stay clear of the Netgear stuff, I have never seen one work well. I was cheap and went Dlink until recently and wont go back! Linksys stuff is awesome.

I have a network where the WRT56g is used as the gateware and access point on channel 5 and i have it uplinked to a Netgear router acting as a switch/ap on channel 9. both have been up for many days now. there was a point where i was having problems with the netgear but a firmware upgrade fixed that. Very happy with both routers but will only now buy llinksys due to all the features both in the hacked firmware and manufacture firmware. currently i'm using the manufacture firmware on both.

Again, YMMV.

Here's 9 pages worth of issues by users, majority 2.2 users:

I struck out on 2.2 and 3.0. 2.0 works for me.

You should be able to get the Netgear WGR614 for less than that AR. My WGR614 has better range and coverage than my WRT54G's (2.0 & 2.2) at default transmission power, so if all you need is a simple router then get whatever is on sale for $9.99 AR that week (Netgear, Belkin, D-Link, Motorola, etc.). However, if you need the advanced features of the Sveasoft firmware, then the WRT54G is the best bang for the buck.

I have both of these routers. Out of the box the Netgear router is much better, also software has more capability and is easier to use. If you want extended capabilities (range, etc.) thru the use of third party s/w then go w/ Linksys.
