Be aware that's it's not easy to remove NAV from your PC. The software is bloated with only so so speed.

NOD32 is quite good. Mc Afee 8.0i corporate is my 1st choice if supported by your place of employment.

Norton no longer allows you to just install AV software. It's now a full system of bloatware that's somewhat buggy, and can cause system instability, not to mention that it's relatively annoying in the home version. I don't know that I'd recommend any of the "major" AV products anymore (Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro - although I haven't used them in 3+ years, so maybe they aren't as bad as the other two now)

AVG is free for home use, and much lighter. Use it, a hardware firewall like those built into the wireless/Cable-DSL modem routers, and switch from IE/Outlook to FireFox/Thunderbird, and you'll be relatively safe from almost everything. However, nothing will protect you if you click on that emailed executable trojan.

Yes, Norton is a verified resource hog that slows down even the fastest, most overclocked systems.

As for alternatives, AntiVir not only beats the above mentioned alternatives, it consistently finds old & new Viruses that others do not.

When it detects one on my system, I try to use the alternatives mentioned above just to see if they also would find it, and six times this year they would not detect them with updated definitions and AntiVir did, so it's no contest for me, AntiVir beats them all.

I have Norton, Trend Micro, Panda, EZ AntiVirus, and McAfee installed on various machines here. Norton is hands down the easiest for novices like my parents to manage. The only product I've found that does a significantly better job at identifying problems is Kaspersky -- which not as easy to understand and never has rebates.
