The release of Opera 8 is mentioned on Slashdot, the site's getting hammered right now.

I registered Opera 5 or 6, I still use it for browsing images on my HD and going to a site that may contain excessive crap (it can turn off anything). I hit this deal.

opera has always been blazing fast for browsing. The downside is that it has problems with more pages than firefox. Firefox was an improvement over the older mozilla versions as far as rendering pages. I rarely find a page that acts up now. What makes firefox the winner for me is all the extensions. Its extensions that make firefox awesome. adblock is god.

There was a comment about Opera 8 at the bottom of the page in german, but I couldn't get it to translate out to something meaningful.

Confirmed here.

Using the Linux version. 7.54 works fine, but 8.0 fails to register with the key.

Not only did my Opera7 license update to Opera 8 but it is even better than I.E.

Try the keyboard command <CTRL SpaceBar> after you open a new window...it will make a new startup page. I use http://vivisimo.com/ for the default.

I think that there's a spell checker available to use in Opera, but I don't remember where I've seen it.

Text that was on the page originally:

Wichtig:

Babelfish:
Importantly: To acquire the same code entitled it after appearance of Opera 8 * these to special prices. Further information in c't 8/2005 and after input c't codes. Much fun with Opera wishes the Opera team. * further information to Opera 8 appears here, if Opera 8 stands to the Download for order.

Google:

Any ideas on what that means?

Edit:
My guess: we gotta wait until the August issue of c't comes out.

For the test-load-speed page
http://scragz.com/tech/mozilla/test-rendering-time.php
Opera is quicker than Firefox, quite consistently, on my Athlon-based and Intel-based systems. Even with MOOX builds for Firefox. Opera is also FAR more crash-resistant, and mature in its ability to apply plugins and extensions without (*GASP*) needing to be restarted. Serves its purpose well, I use both. I have the OperaView extension in my Ffx!

BTW - yeah - thanks OP!

Here's a translation of the confirmation page I got after registering:

Thanks for your registration of Opera. A E-Mail with your license key was dispatched to the indicated E-Mail address. After the appearance of Opera 8 you can acquire this to a special price of 8 euro. This offer can be attained exclusive over www.opera.com/ct magazine and you again needs the code of the c't CD.

So it looks like you have to pay for the upgrade to v8

Why all the hush hush? You can't post a direct link? I will if someone can confirm that this isn't some bannable offense. Sheesh post a link prestranslated through Altavista.

Well, there is a free version with a small ad bar at the top. And a paid for one without those ads. That is what the license is for - to remove the ads.

Holy crap. This thing is a ton faster than Firefox. I didn't notice it so much when initially loading a page but when going back/forward it is blazing fast. BTW, does this thing not block popups? It just tabs any popup I get which doesn't really help in terms of system resources.

Check your Advanced Preferences, Tools > Preferences or Alt + P, under Windows > Pop ups or Quick Preferences (F12) to disable pop ups.

Hey~ The code they sent me doesn't work with Opera 8! Are you guys able to work it? A show of hands, please.

Oh by the way, I don't think I'm going back to FF. I love this Opera!

I also just made my 1000th post!!

How did you get the Version 8 to work with the registration code given for version 7?

The version of Opera 8 he's running is one of the betas. Opera 8 final is build #7561. Still is a really good deal though, you can buy a version 8 license for $15.90 with this keycode. Better deal than the $24 I paid for a V7 license around new years.

Tabbrowser Extensions does all i need. I tried opera for a short time and i like FF better to be honest. But then again, I am not much into change when it comes to something i'm used to like browsing. Tabbrowser extensions does saved sessions, as well as single windows tabbed browsing. I admit it does have some problem with popup windows that might be needed for some sites, but i cant complain... "ieview" works great for that. hehe.
