I just found out about this place. They sell you a pager for $50 and give you FREE unlimited pages, FREE voice mail, FREE email with pager notification. There are NO service fees, NO activation fees and NO minimum service contracts. On top of that they throw in a FREE $10 pre-paid phone card.

Looks like the only catch is that when people call to leave you a page or voice mail they play a short ad (8-10 seconds). That's not so bad in my opinion.

Here is their website if your interested in checking them out.

Coverage is kind of limited, looks like its just in Cali and Arizona, and even then, in very limited areas.

I checked with them about coverage. They cover California, Arizona and part of Nevada. They say if this takes off like they hope it to they will then start offering it in other states. The coverage in CA and AZ is actually pretty good if you look at their coverage map. The areas they don't have coverage are either in the mountain range or the desert.

Anyways if they don't cover your state yet let them know your interested and that you want to be notified when they do expand to your area.

Yeah I saw them (totalyfreepaging) too, they do cover more states (now) but the pagers cost almost twice as much. They also charge a $25 activation fee and there is a limit on how many pages you get per month for free and then they charge you for any pages over that limit which is only about 5 pages per day. Paging4Zilch doesn't have activation fees and you are allowed unlimited pages per month. They will also repair or replace your pager for only $20 if it is damaged, defective or stolen no matter how long you own it. The other place only warrenties it against defects (not damage or loss) for 90 days. After 90 days or if it is damged or stolen your only option is to buy another pager from them at full price. I live in CA so the paging4zilch looks like a much better deal. If it does well in the 3 states they are offering it in they say they will go national.

Don't forget that if this doesn't "take off," you're not going to see your $50 again.

<< Don't forget that if this doesn't "take off," you're not going to see your $50 again. >>

By "taking off" I mean for it to expand into other states. I checked with them and this company has been around since 1995 and they currently service over 300,000 customers in CA, AZ and NV. Sure any business could fold up shop tomorrow, but knowing this is not some outfit that just started out a few months ago gave me enough confidence to go ahead and order. Worse case scenario I paid $50 for a brand new pager and I can take it to almost any other paging service and have it activated through them.

<< Doesn't the totallyfreepaging.com has an ad on every incoming page? >>

Yeah and that was another thing I liked better about paging4zilch.com was that I only get hit with an ad when I retrieve voice mail. Even if I have 3 or 4 voice mails waiting I get one short ad and then I can access all my voice mail. When I get paged I won't get any ads.

Grimm, If you're gonna make a sales pitch, do it in another forum. If some of the REAL members of this forum think it's a hot deal, WE will find out about it and post it. It sounds like a decent deal to me, but it is very obvious that you are affiliated with this company in some way.

It sounds like a good deal to me. I have one question. Do you get a local phone number or is it 800 number and then you use a pin?

I must agree, the advertising pitch was pretty thick, a for effort tho... but it seems like a fairly decent deal... but it would be even better if they waived the $50 fee... contact me if they do.... i'd be interested then.

some useful info would be: what brand/model pager do you get for $50, do you get your own pager number, or do you have to call a number, then enter a pin?

edit: according to their website, it's a "mitsuki" pager (never heard of it), and you get a personal local phone number. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, the only catch is that whenever someone wants to page you, they have to listen to an ad, and whenever you check your voicemail, you have to listen to an ad. Not that bad, considering the cost. The pager holds 21 messages. The only thing that worries me is: how long will this company stay in business? With no constant source of revenue from its subscribers, who knows how long you will get service for free? And I am not so sure another pager company will be able to activate this pager. But, if they can continue to get revenue from advertisers, and they stay alive, it looks like a pretty good deal.

Well I looked into this pretty good and thought it was a really good deal. I figured I would post my findings here and encorage others to check it out. After all the more that sign up the better the odds I'll get to use this service for a very long time without paying anymore for it. Sorry if I came off as a salesman making a pitch.

if you look at other ad supported free services like isp's you will see that this may not be the best buisness model. Also with all the paid for service paging companies that have been going broke reciently (tsr wireless chapter 7, pagenet ch 11, mobilecomm ch-11) i find it hard to beleive that a free carrier can survive! plus paging is dead, it died a few years ago (out here in ca. anyway) even junior high school kids got cell phones now that they are so dam cheap!

Not for life...for as long as they remain in business, which may not be all that long.
