Ahh, i don't know if these have been posted at all, but heres some stuff in a genre I love.
First off:

ABA Games
All of these games (and their music) were the product of a single guy: Kenta Cho.
These are different levels of abstract shmups, I can highly reccomend almost everything he's made.
For these games (and almost every game after) the controls are usually Arrow keys for movement, Z for shoot, shift or X for secondary weapon.
It makes a lot of sense when you try it out.
Gunroar:
A multidirectional boat based shmup, which has many different control settings. The multiplyer and difficulty are based upon how fast you forcibly force the screen to scroll up. Endless
Torus Trooper:
"Tunnel" based shmup, the main draw of this game is speed - hold forward to increase it! Endless.
TUMIKI Fighters:
Typical horizontal shmup, except that body parts of dead enemies will stick to you. Use them to increase your firepower and defense. 5 levels.
PARSEC47:
Fast, Difficult. Two different ship settings, standard vertical playing field. Defeat as many enemies as possible, endless.
A7Xpg
One of his very few lackluster games.
rRootage
Boss battle after boss battle, this has different modes that mimic popular commercial shmups. Gigawing, Ikaruga and Psyvarrior.
Noiz2sa:
Very basic, difficult, yet somehow calming shmup. Has 10 main levels but also an excellent endless mode. His first big game.

WARNING FOREVER
Top-down shooter against a single boss repeatedly. One of the most addictive games out there, the boss evolves and grows based around how you manage to defeat it. Small enough to fit on a floppy, Hours upon hours of enjoyment.

The "Tohou" series of games. more shmups, these ones with mesmorizing and beautiful bullet patterns. Incredibly difficult, fun, and they also tend to entertain crowds.

PERFECT CHERRY BLOSSOM:
The most famous out of all of this series, essentially, you choose one of 3 characters (note: each character has two firing modes, select up or down on the character selection menu) and you dodge thousands of pretty bullet patterns till you defeat the 3 levels and win the game.
There are a bunch of numbers on the side of the screen, but they are rather easy to figure out through experimentation.
It sounds simple, but its refreshingly fun and amazing to watch.

EMBODIMENT OF THE SCARLET DEVIL
The game that spawned Perfect Cherry Blossom, it's not as pretty, doesn't have as many options, but its slightly more difficult and still very worth the play.

IMPERISHABLE NIGHT
The sequel to Perfect Cherry Blossom, featuring faster gameplay, improved graphics, and an entirely different two character setup. Its better in some ways, worse in other ways, but definately worth your time.

CHO-REN-SHA 68K
Another shmup, this one featuring graphics more similar to those of a later genesis game for a bit of an old school vibe. The gameplay is wonderful on it, and the music is addicting. It has the fault of necessary repeated tapping of the fire button, but otherwise its almost a flawless game.

Last but definately not least.

GRID WARS:
Geometry Wars, for PC. Absolutely awesome with many different control methods. I've been playing it nonstop recently.
