Tried this but decided to go download the old acrobat at oldversion.com. Version 5.0.5 is a good one. Useful maybe, but not exactly a deal esp when there's already a software forum. Sure beats the free 9/11 propaganda dvd though

Part of the reason that 7.x is faster is because they preload the software at each reboot (check your start menu). So, you are simply keeping part of the software preloaded all the time - taking up memory and such.

So, it's not really "faster"... they are just "cheating" to make it seem faster. If you unload the preloader, it's about as fast as the old versions were.

how do you disable some of the plugins

I figure I'll need to keep some of them on which are used in most pdf docs

Heck, how do you properly disable -any- plug-ins in Acrobat Reader??? 'Just wasted 15 minutes searching for a pull-down that supported disabling, but couldn't find anything (7.0+) in options or Help.

You -can- move -some- files from "plug-ins" to "optional", but not all: I couldn't move Acroform or Soap, but could move Accessibility, eBook, LegalPDF, Multimedia, SaveasRTF, and SendMail. I'm clueless what the impact of moving these files is/was, but at least AR loaded w/o any error msg.

I have been using Foxit because Acrobat Reader was such a hog - sometimes firfox would crash with AR for me - Foxit has been very good for me.

Hmmm.... Acrobat Reader 7.x loads within 3 seconds on my IBM Laptop...and I have the pre-loader removed from my startup menu.... much faster than the un-mondified 6.x series

If you mean Fahrenheit 9/11, TRUTH beats Bush FOG/LIES any day, my friend and fellow rightwing Republican, as you will agree. Acrobat 7.01 is indeed faster than earlier versions

Adobe Reader Speed-Up program is the shiznits. I normally keep all of the plug-ins disabled, but if I need them for something I just go into the Speed-Up program and restore Acrobat's original configuration, then set it to speed up again when I'm done.

Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel -> Uncheck Adobe -> all gone!

(but v7 is definitely a big improvement over v6. - the dreaded 'save a copy' bug is gone! yeah!!)

He is talking about a free 9/11 DVD that was posted here a day or two ago. It was about government propaganda and such.

How funny someone would try to throw a political statement at me without knowing any details like what dvd I was talking about or even what stance I have on any issue. :disgust:

btw, the point I was making is that free software isn't exactly a deal...but for reference, at least better than free propaganda dvds.

...How about if we just made manuals in HTML format rather than this lame, CPU-intensive Adobe crap?

I can only dream.

Seriously. There is no sense in having a totally unique file format that basically just allows you to zoom in and out. HTML with a table of contents and links to the beginning of each section worked great for years, what's the point in making people install a program to view a specific format for your manuals? Don't fix it if it isn't broken.

Uhm, nope. Have you even installed it or are you just guessing from previous versions?

Yes, I have installed it, and it DOES have the startup menu item.

I will admit, it's faster than 6, but 4.x was the fastest, period. 7.x is tolerable with AR-speedup, though.
