FREE Photo Editing Software

I've tried it out minimally. I haven't touched on most of the features yet, but it's very slow and a memory hog. With 7 folders containing around 166 photos, it took minutes to "index" them, and chewed up over a gig of RAM.

I played with it for a bit, it does not modify the original, if you go back to the thumbnail screen after modifying and saving something you will see an "Original" and "Edited" tab for that particular thumbnail. Now, what I can't figure out is where exactly is that "Edited" file being saved - I can't seem to find it anywhere with windows explorer.

I noticed the same thing. I also thought it was slow and over all I didn't like it.

Man, I missed out -AGAIN- as the versions all have 30-day time bomb.

This should be marked DEAD since it is no longer free. But, for those of you who downloaded it, I'm curious what you think. I've yet to find a pro...only cons.

Cons I see:

1. You can't just open a file. You must INDEX the FOLDER the file is in before you can work with it.
2. Indexing takes a LONG time. During indexing, I watched Windows Task Manager. Over 50% of my CPU went to indexing. Memory usage occasionally topped 800,000K and rarely dropped below 750,000K.
3. Indexing results in sub-folders being created in every directory you select to have indexed. This is where the working copies of your images are stored so the original isn't overwritten. Makes browsing for images more tedious.
4. BLOATED program with an 85MB install file.

Are there any good points to this program that I am missing that would outweigh these negatives?

Not that I'm aware of.

The best free one I think I've ran across is Faststone which is available on my freeware site (linked in my signature). It doesn't yet support tagging photos (ie; organization), but as an editor, it's on par with ACDSee.

For a free photo organizer, you could go with Adobe Photoshop Album starter edition (also available on MissingBytes.net) but it's rather slow IMO.

My personal favorite is Paint.NET. It looks great, works well, and includes layer support.

I only see a 30-day trial. They say "This product is free. This offer lasts for 30 days." But under the download section you can either download the 30-day trial or buy a license.

I'm missing something obvious aren't I?

The original post said it was free for only a short period.

True, but since the website still says the quote about it being free I'm wondering if there isn't something I'm missing about this seeming contradiction.
