I've used these for months and they're very effective.

Both are standard in my arsenal. IMO the free Pop-up-Stopper is better than a quite a few pay popop stoppers I have tried.

Isnt editing your hosts file as effective as using the pop-up stopper or any pop ad program?

If you use Ad-Aware, also download their Ref-file updater. Otherwise you'll have to manually download and extract files from their site everytime to update the ref-files.

Doing that doesn't stop the popup scripts and the annoying windows. Sometimes the scripts are for ads and sometimes they aren't...sometimes you want the popups, like maybe on amazon when they might display a nice special or something, so you want to be able to toggle it, which pupup stopper allows.

I like Analogx's POW!

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pow.htm

It automatically closes i.e. and netscape windows where the titles match a list. It comes with a basic list, and has a really easy way to add more to the list. Everytime a pop-up shows up, just add it to the list, and you won't see it again. That way you can keep the pop ups you like, and not the ones you don't.

And, if a window closes on you, when you don't want it to, simply pause, go about your business, than unpause...

You'll still get a pop-up...it'll just be blank. More effective than that would be Mozilla, which lets you disable certain features of JavaScript that tend to be abused (such as opening unrequested windows (pop-ups) and changing the status-bar text).

I can't say that I've ever used Pop-Up Stopper (before switching to Mozilla, I had a fairly comprehensive ad-blocker running that killed most pop-ups), but Ad-aware is a good thing to keep around for getting rid of spyware on other people's computers. (I know better than to let that kind of crap land on my computer. )

edit: i downloaded popupstopper and am running it. tried to go to a few high popup content sites (like kazaalite.com) and the popups still came up. that kind of defeats the purpose of having a popup stopper, no?

I use POW. However there is one drawback. If the ad is not titled and has the default Netscape or IE name in the bar you might accidently kill off windows that you might have wanted to see.....

I use EMS Fre Surfer mk II or whatever. Very good, and keeps logs of blocked windows for free.

I use Pop-Up Ad Filter, which kills all the standard web pop-ups.
I've been hit with the Net Send type of pop-ups. Frikkin' obnoxious. Does anyone know how to kill/prevent these?

Your firewall (you do have one, right?) needs to be set to block them...make sure TCP port 139 and UDP port 135 aren't visible outside your network. Find more info here.
