I already bought the clothes and sent the rebate 4 days ago. I kept looking for the catch before I fell for it (besides the almost illegal lack of any brand name at all to prevent anyone from actually researching how much the thing is really worth) and just now found it. The friggin screen is 4:3 ratio. So in effect the "8 inch" screen is equivalent to about a 5" 16:9.

Since virtually all my (and everyone else?s) DVD's are widescreen by choice, I just screwed myself.

Levi's is giving them away because no one except a no-tech hick would *buy* a 4:3 display anymore, especially for DVD playback.

Oh well, I?ll wait till it gets here and take all the friggin clothes back to JCP. They want to screw me, I'll return the favor. Why can't any company just be honest anymore.

I can't believe I didn't spot that before now, I guess the glitter of a seemingly good deal clouded my vision.

First off, I doubt the lack of a brand name was to intentionally prevent anyone from researching the DVD player. It is a free DVD player. Besides the rules state that an equal or better product will be substituted if supplies run out so brand name might not mean anything anyway. Even at 4:3, an 8" DVD is likely going to cost you at least a $100 anyway.

Second, I am certain that JCP does not want to screw you. Make money, yes. Screw you, no. You could have read the specs BEFORE you ordered. You said yourself that your vision was clouded. There was no dishonesty involved here. They simply gave you, the consumer, the opportunity to get a free DVD player by purchasing >$100 of their product. How is this dishonest? They did not imply that this was a widescreen DVD player. You implied this.

Most of my DVDs are widescreen as well, and no I wouldn't go out and BUY a 4:3 ratio player. But the beauty of this is I didn't have to BUY a DVD player. It is free! I ordered clothes that I was going to need anyway and got a DVD player as a bonus. And get this, it was FREE.

Now, unless JCP denies my request or sends me something that contains specs lower than they posted online, then they haven't screwed me.

I take full responsibility for not noticing it was a 4:3. I suppose my point is, since last week I have checked virtually every store in our small city for portable DVD players. Not only did I not find multiples, I didn't find even *one* in that obsolete 4:3 format. What I did find was a boat load of 7" 16:9's selling for as low as $69.

Turns out JCP are not the ones pulling a fast one. Levi is in charge of the promotion and fulfillment of the rebate. I just got off the phone with them a minute ago. They say it will be 4-5 weeks before our submissions even show in their system, so to anyone who has yet to send off their rebate, I would recommend sending it return receipt.

My guess is this will be a horrific experience for a lot of people. Virtually everyone will expect to receive the same format units as what stores are currently stocking, but I am even more concerned about denied claims. The other disturbing term is the substitution clause. I purchased the clothes specifically for the DVD player. I am not interested in that being substituted out for a $10 Levi backpack ?valued? at $200.

To me the offer is still misleading in the same way that if someone saw an offer for a 27" TV these days, one would assume it was color.

In the end, it is free, so we will wait and see. JCP has a very liberal return policy, so if we do indeed get screwed at least the product can be returned as a matter of principle.

Kind of hard to return once you've mailed in the original sales receipt, isn't it?

Can always return for store credit, right?

Actually, when I checked out the cashier gave me a 'gift receipt' in case I had any problems with the clothes (since I have to mail the original in).

Can you get a refund from a gift receipt, or store credit only?

I used to work at JCP when I was in high school. With a Gift Receipt, you can get Store credit or it can be put on a JCP Credit Card. That is, unless they changed the policy

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I still think you are not getting the point here. Noone is pulling a fast one. They are offfering a product in a promotion. I don't think anyone should make any assumptions about this DVD player above and beyond what is presented in the specifications. They were quite clear about the specs even if this isn't the latest and greatest DVD player available. Every should NOT expect what the stores are stocking. They should expect what the site has told us to expect.

If I do not receive a DVD player with at least the minimum specs stated on the website, then I will complain. If what comes is an equal or greater spec'd out DVD player, then they have upheld their part of the bargain. If it is only worth $69 then oh well. It was free. If it is 4:3, which it should be based on the specs, then that is fine since that is what it states it is.

The 4-5 weeks is fine as well since it is within the 6-8 week time period referenced on the form. Now, if they do not comply within the time frame specified or if they do give out a $10 backpack valued at $200 (which would seem fraudulent based on the verbiage in the form) or some other non-portable DVD product, then they will have pulled a fast one. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and if they screw me then I WILL find a way to return the items I purchased.

As for being a horrific experience, well maybe, maybe not. Lets just see what transpires and go from there. I am not going to condemn JCP, LEVI Strauss or Dockers for offering me a free product that might not be exactly what I want as long as it meets the specs they published for it.

Anyway, lets all hope for the best here, wear our new clothes and watch some letterboxed movies on our free portable players.

SCREW JOB ALERT !!!

Hey guys, if you submitted the rebate for the JCP DVD Player I would urge you to check its status asap.

I bought the clothes ($101.96 before taxes), sent the rebate the next day, and waited. I called today to verify it was received and valid.

Much to my surprise and disgust the rebate center claims I only spent $72.
I sent the receipt for Gods sake, can't they read??

I called JCP and they agree I spent more than enough of the qualifying products to qualify for the rebate and are investigating for me.

All this trouble for an obsolete POS player. Never again, never!

OMG! That is such horrible bait and switch!
They removed all the worthwhile features like MP4 and TV, reduced the screen size, and they did it 3 weeks after the offer??

After Tomer's post, I called the number on the order form. I sent my request in around 6/12, and when I called on 6/28, they told me the order had been qualified and posted to their system the day before. So, according to the lady, I should receive the DVD player in the mail in about 6-8 weeks, maybe sooner...it all depends. I made around $124 in qualifying purchases (after coupons and before tax) for those interested.

We'll see how this all turns out when/if the actual player shows up in the mail.

Good luck to everyone who's having problems with this.
