Not sure what you mean? I have been a visitor to anandtech.com for a long time, I found it when I was researching components to build my computer. Since then I've searched the forum whenever I want to learn about a new piece of hardware I'm looking at.

Anyway, I just signed up today because it's the first time I wanted to post, I thought you guys might find this as cool as I do, didn't mean to cause any trouble...

Looks good. But I would like to hear from other people who have used this before I sign up.

Wow.. no, I've never tried VNC, or even heard about it. I'm gonna have to try that out. Thanks, papa.

I tried another Free Remoter PC Access program called www.logmein.com . They offer a free and a paid service . Their sw seemed to really slow down my machine and screw up function like scandisk, so I uninstalled it .

my company uses webex products on a pratically weekly basis to showcase stuff online. I like it a LOT as it seems to be able to keep up with whatever your showing, so i can only imagine they integrated their technology to make a remote desktop interfae. I say this is a hot deal, cause using webex for business it is costing a LOT

Keep in mind that most (if not all) VNC programs do NOT have any sort of encryption built-in. Some have plug-in that CAN encrypt thing, but this depends on having the same encryption plug-in on both ends of the connection. If you use the Java viewing app, then you do not get the encryption.

The only way (AFAIK) to encrypt the VNC connection when using the Java app is to use SSH, whose installation is not exactly obvious (IMHO).

I've used TightVNC for years. Incredible product. The problem is having to reconfig your firewall to get to it. Gotomypc uses http to get around this. If this new free one does that well for free it would be great.

True, same thoughts here. It is EXPENSIVE. About $200 a seat per month.

I have been using Gotomypc for sometime, love it. If this stays "free" with the few limitations listed, what a deal.

So the original poster and the only other person to claim to have used this product both just joined today...hmmm.

webex is a real thing... i use it to connect remotely to servers inside a customer firewall from home... don't know about this freebee thing, though... and my experience is that webex isn't blazing fast, just on par with remote desktop...

UltraVNC is the best of the various VNC flavors (of which there are at least 20). It builds on the compression speed of TightVNC by adding file transfer in either direction. It is absolutely perfect for helping your parents via remote.

Remote Desktop actually gives the best "sitting at the remote computer" speed, but the person at the hosting computer is logged off automatically. (This is probably what helps the speed.) With VNC, both the server and the client see the same thing, and both have functioning keyboard & mouse.

If you have a dynamic IP, you will probably need to set up a link at a site like dyndns.org. E.g., www.anandtechuser.dyndns.org can always point to your machine's IP.
