What are CAT5e patch cables for? Are these the types of cable you can use to transfer files between two computers? If not, what are those types of cables called? I know they're some type of CAT cables =P

yes! I've been needing a 1 foot cable to go from my router to my patch pannel since they are right next to each other. My father sells electrical and networking equipment, but has never been able to get anything less than 3 foot long.

Patch cables are for connecting PC to router, Cable modem to PC, etc. To hook between two PCs without a hub, switch or router requires a crossover patch cable.

Easiest way is to make your own. You can buy everything you need from Home Depot or online cheaply. It's easy to do and you cut your cables to the exact length you need.

Yeah, I thought about that, and I've got enough cat5 to make a lot, but when i can buy them for < $1 from my father, it seems a waste of time and money to buy the terminals and the tool for making my own.

I'm not sure, but I think that the specs call for a minimum of 1 meter (~3 ft.) between nodes on a local physical subnet. That's probably why you can't find anything shorter. I agree though, when connecting a pile of networking equipment together that's sitting right next to each other, 3 ft. seems like too much cable.

The shortest the spec allows is 18 inches. But most places won't sell less than 3 feet or 1 meter.
