This site cardcops will see if your credit card has been posted. This site is temporarily down since it was hammered after CNN posted an article about them. But you go first...
so they monitor zombie irc's, record all the CC's, create a query database, and give it general web access.... :disgust:
By the time they set the DB up, and implement it on the net, the CC's are long since blacklisted, and ignored by the phishers. Good way of gaining PP...(paranoia-publicity), but that's about it...go corporate media go!
I've actually got a credit card acount that was recently compromised - about a half a dozen illegitimate charges on my last statement. It'll be interesting to see if its made it to their database, once they're back online.
This is the same company that hosted a list of "lifted" numbers (IIRC, they were known compromised numbers), dropped a few lines in IRC channels where thieves were known to hang out, and survey how long it took for the numbers to be sold and used (a couple of hours). Before that, they did profiled your "average" card thief and how little of his/her day is actually spent thieving.
These guys come up a shock survey every few months to keep themselves in the headlines.
Hey, if you post your Name, Address, SSN, Savings acct # and Bank Routing #, I'd be more than happy to tell you if your bank account has been compromised by people who know how to wire funds from your account.
i'd trust it less if it was .gov.... they seem to take thousands out of your bank account every april 15th.
and all those hackings on the .gov cuz they dont hire professionals to do the network administrating
and how would this site know if it were in the hands of thieves or not, unless it was the thieves itself. does it employ martha stewart foresight technology?

Maybe you really don't need to.
And, actually, having a credit card can actually kill your credit rating... a mistake by a bank, identity theft, or your credit card number being compromised on-line, can create a situation almost impossible to fix, or it's day-to day use can bury you in so much debt that your rating self-destructs. Hey, these CC companies are counting on you to get overextended!

If it's a search by CC number format, you could just enter the first 4 digits and then browse the results looking for your number. Then you don't have to compromise your entire CC number.
Actually, it's the first 6 digits. It's known in the banking industry as a 'bin number' and identifies your institution. Each institution can own multiple bin numbers.
The folks at cardcops are legit, so checking your number there won't result in *THEIR* using it fraudulently. Still, who knows how secure their datebase really is. I totally wouldn't trust giving out my number, even to a site like cardcops, which I know is on the up and up.
