I am the decider.

Meh, I just signed out, and it was simple to sign up again two more times with new name/pass for wife and son. Asked wife, and son is happy with anything including death and 666.

I have signed up for that too, but had no idea where to go from there. Do I use some kind of telepohone client software?

Some worthwhile information in this thread.

I posted a comment that contains a bit more information with regards to credits for those making their inital entry into the Skype world. For those still experiencing problems (most seem to be resolved), read the contents of the official update link in said comment, and follow the instructions contained therein should the problem prove persistent.

Also, there are a number of free and low-cost incoming number solutions available (including SkypeIn of course, as well as others like StanaPhone). Most offer the choice between both softphone and hardware based solutions.

A simple search should give a starting point.

Get a softphone and free account from Free World Dial up. Then go to IPKall and enter your Free World Dial up account info. It's that easy. I think IPKall will work with other free VoIP accounts, perhaps skype, but not sure.

I have an unlocked vonage voip box, can I type in the settings into it and just skip the whole headphone/mic computer part? Heck I'd even pay the 3.12 a month to have a number people can call me at.

That looks like a good find. How much trouble is it to setup? Just install the extra software and plug in with USB? Have you tried it with skype yet? Does it seem to work pretty well with it? I'm definately interested in grabbing one for that price, even if it isn't wireless. Heck I can use it on my laptop if I need too since I have wireless in my home.

Wasn't this basically a free "service"?

Free PC to PC. Skype has always been free that way and you could also use MSN or AIM voice chats, or other alternatives. Heck you could even use in game chat over mics like in CS.

Now its free PC to phones. That was never free as far as I know.

Basically now you can totally eliminate your long distance bill from your landlines, and no need for VOIP.

In fact, if you have a little Axia (I think thats the name) or similar pocket PC, you can use it on a wirless campus or wireless workplace to use the PPC version of skype to do free long distance in those enviroments or any enviroments where you can get wireless access. Heck you could drive around town with it and look for an open wireless location and do long distance calls that way lol.

There's also a way that you could hook up a cell phone to a computer using skype and cut out even some of those charges.

So basically you can almost totally eliminate all long distance charges and potentially a big chunk of cell phone minutes/charges using this.

It was real easy to set up. I never used Skype before. After I set it up my son was on the phone for about 3 hours. He said you can hear a little background noise.

Short answer is somebody must be doing it now or working on it, its just too tasty not to do.

T-Mobile and Cingular cannot be used to send faxes from your PC because FAX data signals can't be sent over cell phones using these networks like they can be sent using land lines.

Also, PC to phone providers I've tried in the past can't be used for this purpose either.

Special expensive subscription services can, but this sucks for those of us that send a FAX or two every other month, if that.

Thank you. But all I could find using that link are monthly subscription fax services.

$10 a month is not a good deal if you send a few pages every month or two, if that.

You might look at MaxEmail.

Relatively inexpensive, excellent customer service, and offers a free trial.

Its a long list with free options at the end mostly. I do very very little outgoing fax, so I just do a 15 or 30 day trial. One of the 12 cent places also gives you a buck to start with.

Thing is when you need a fax sent, fast and reliable almost always trump cheap. Cheap is just gravy when you can get it.

So when you guys use Skype, can you hear the other person when you are talking? On my system, it's half-duplex. When I'm talking, Skype doesn't send anything to my speakers until I stop.
