data servers for landsat ARE slow...before zooming in on anything, after starting the program, click the "USGS 1M" button, to use the b/w united states geological survey pics instead. note that this only works if you want to look at the USA. Assume this is a work-around until they get the landsat servers back up and running(still suffering from the /. effect)

I still haven't been able to zoom in, the servers are always packed. "Trying again in two minutes..," damn it!

Can someone post some screenshots? THESE GUYS need more pics.

Or even any video? Fraps works too you know.

Hi guys, I'm from OcUK where I posted a thread on World Wind.....it's become huge, and there's tons of info and screenshots, and links to the World Wind forums etc (which none of you seem to have found ).

Some of the images are amazing, particularly the .25metre stuff

Check out the WW forums when they're back up....there's so much more to WW than most people have found

To answer a few Qs:

I can never get any closer than the city/suburb level. It always says "trouble connecting to server, please try again in 2 minutes."

I can zoom in and out and get down closer to see more cities and landmarks... but the actual picture doesnt change. It is just a single color. I wonder if it has anything to do with a work firewall?

This is really hot.

Clearly a work in progress, ie you need to read 50 posts to get part of it to work.

No reason it could not be expanded to support all of nasa's image data, all the planets etc.

Nasa lives on funding, and what better way to stir up a HUGE amount of grassroots support.

Try www.twobeds.com/nasa, I've got 53mbit to it


Guys just to let you know, there's much more cached image data on http://www.twobeds.com/nasa now - 400Mb worth or so. Simply unzip into the correct folder in NASA\cache and zoom to areas which the files contain (there's txts on the site saying what's in where, or the filenames say etc).

WW will load the cached data instead of downloading, so eventhough Landsat7 is dead you will see something

In the cache files are:

Cache02:
Andes Mountains
Amazon River
Great Salt Lake (visible and false)
Los Angeles (just north)
Eastern Canada

Cache03:
Isreal (Dead Sea)
Great Pyramids
Mount Kilaminjaro (Eastern Africa)
Galopogas Islands (West of South America) (visible and false)

Mostly Europe:
Just what it says on the tin. Most of England, parts of Germany, and bits of Spain.


Also - there's a patch for WW. You'll need this to use the similarly named cache file - the older version of WW won't work with it.

Lastly pelase note that not all cache files contain the fully-zoomed-in versions of the Landsat7 data.

The patch comes directly from NASA, it's jsut not released yet because their server died

mikeford: yes, they need lots and lots of support to get serious funding for this project, especially since their budget is so tight given what is now a huge userbase of WW since the slashdotting.

Anyway - hope you guys enjoy this, and that my server survives
