Free software to play DVDs ?

I just changed my PC and it looks like the software I had on my previous PC to play DVDs isn't free anymore.

Do you have any free softwares to suggest ?

Interesting, I can play most store bought DVDs using the media player on my XP Pro lappy.

Did the decoder get automaticlly downloaded during some upgate.

Prebuilt systems come with that kind of software I believe.

If it was a prebuilt machine (and I'm going to assume it was since you said you have a laptop) then they probably installed DVD player software. When that software is installed, it also installs an MPEG2 decoder. And once the decoder is installed, Windows Media Player can now use it to play DVDs.

And even with VLC or MPC you still need a license to be able to legally play MPEG2, it's even mentioned in the VLC FAQ.

you can't play them coz you don't have installed proper codecs, install for example K-lite codec pack, and you'll be able to play them on any player you like.
