This Bill would amend the Canadian Human Rights Act to add gender identity and gender expression to the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination. As with all well meaning legislation in the past, the repercussions will result in repression. This is a country which has had a twitter trial, and has fined comedians tens of thousands of dollars over people being offended, but they don't learn.

Heavens! Canadians won't have the legal right to treat transgender people as subhuman! Whatever will they do? Oh, right... they'll just treat transgender people as human beings deserving of the same basic respect that everyone should always receive.

And a friendly reminder: you're still allowed to have those hateful anti-transgender views in Canada, or to make uncaring remarks (intentionally or not). You just can't let that hate influence your business, or create content designed primarily to incite hate. A conservative Christian group can say it doesn't believe transgender people are right about their identities; it can't tell its followers to discriminate against and harass the transgender community.

It'd be wonderful if the transphobes here actually read what the law says, instead of conjuring up an Orwellian straw man. Canadians are not living under some terrible yoke of oppression -- they just believe that free speech doesn't extend to the point where you're impinging on the freedoms of others.

Then suddenly, after almost three hours into the day’s hearing, the Crown started crying. She grabbed a tissue from across the table, dabbed her eyes and apologized to the judge saying she was upset over a personal issue. The judge shut-down the hearing to reconvene on October 6th- the date originally scheduled for the final ruling on Elliott’s innocence or guilt.
