The problem IMO with legislating against anti-social behavior is that it only seems to encourage it.

The balance between freedom of speech and the tyranny of political correctness is always in play. It can have its absolutists and fanatics on either side. It seems that the quality and temperament of intellect to rationally weigh the issues as they come to public attention is a quality ineffable of explanation. It's like the definition of porn, you know it when you see it, what is and what isn't or at least some do.

My motto is that speech should be completely free when it should be and limited if the dangers outweigh the risk of the loss of freedom. But then I have the morality of a conservative and everything is easy for me.

Should we be surprised to see 0rootard, Beta Max, and Mikhail on the wrong side of common sense and decency? Go back to Mother Russia comrades...

And yet everyday Canadians really don't give a shit about the bill because we aren't intolerant asshats like the OP.

The poll found that 84 per cent of Canadians support Bill C-16, which was unveiled by Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould in May. If passed, it will cement the terms "gender identity" and "gender expression" as prohibited grounds for discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act.

I've always voted conservative in Canada. Without fail. This last election the intolerance and hate they displayed turned me and the majority of Canadians away. There's a reason the Conservative party is a shell of what it was just three years ago in Canada.

Common sense is what the majority of people follow, not your little group of screaming cry-bully "social justice warriors" trying to change what "decency" even means.
Families? Pfft! Microaggression against people-of-coleerrrr who, like, don't always have daads? We should, like, get rid of families to make our LGTBWERQQQ@#L%#:Ü friends happy (for a day.)

As I posted above the majority in this matter support the measure. You're on the wrong side.

^ With due respect, freedom of speech is not necessary for the majority.

The funny thing: for all the claims that the pro-LGBT segment is a bunch of crybabies, it seems to be the anti-LGBT crowd throwing the biggest temper tantrum. Sorry, haters, but you've lost this one forever... feel free to grow up and move on.

I remember watching this talk on psychopaths (pro'lly a TED-X thing), and one of the main tells is when they accuse others of doing exactly what they are guilty of, and playing innocent all the while.

Of course, it could also just be eejit fuckwads that are upset over their concrete dodgeball being taken away.

So, straightforwardly, can you now go to jail if you verbally offend the wrong person in Canada?

No. To be exact, this law applies to discrimination and inciting hate. If you're in a conversation with someone and you use an anti-transgender term, that's not by a crime by itself. But if you're running a shop and you refuse to serve transgender people, or you run a website urging people to harass transgender people, you're in trouble.

I've actually largely voted conservative for most of my life but stopped around time they started to get more religious, fuck that shit.

Poor Blue-Max stuck in his own personal frozen hell. Blue you should immigrate, you could possibly claim political persecution from the ebil commies in charge in canuckistan. There are parts of the US you would fit right in.

He's the most Beta triggered cuck that has ever disgraced these boards. Always playing the victim. Victims like him should be very supportive of measures like this...

I, for one, am glad all you liberals are in support of opening up all these laws and criminally prosecuting all the speech which you find offensive and unwanted. Proud of you. You're doing the right thing supporting this...

I'm just going to land this gem right here for you to contemplate the possible consequences of your righteousness (or would that be lefteousness?):
