Some people feel this program, Spybot, is better then Ad-aware. I use both. Just be careful if you use the HOSTS file. I found out that I couldn't connect to NAV after installing that file. Fast, and they seem to update their list more often.

Spybot

So if you do use the hosts file............what precautions should be taken, just back it up?

It found a couple things - hotbar and search-explorer entries - cool! Adaware didn't find these.

other than that, it wants to delete just about all program logs and histories and cookies etc.

Odd, I use Ad-Aware and it always found hotbar entries on my puters?

I did a backup prior to installing this HOSTS file, when I figured out why NAV wouldn't connect, I used the Spybot's remove Spybot's HOSTS file option. Then things where back to normal. Lucky me, I'm not to smart when it comes to computers.

I just downloaded this program. I also have Ad-Aware installed so I ran the Ad-Aware program to see what I came up with. It showed a total of three links that I then deleted.

Then I ran this new spyware program, and it came up with about 87 links that I could have eliminated, many of which I did. What is really amazing is that when you click on one of the found links, it will give you a description of what the link does/does not do so you can make an intelligent decision as to whether or not you want to delete it. It also does a backup of the links you eliminate, so that if you have made a mistake by deleting one of the links, you can restore it.

This seems like an amazing program to me based on my first use. Much more thorough search than Ad-Aware, with many more links found on my computer.

Thanks for the post 1Cheap2Crazy. You might be cheap but you are crazy like a fox!! :Q

Nope. I'm a studmuffin of a bull, aka, Bull Studmuffin. Yea baby, I'm the man.

I use the Proxomitron too, love it, but it can kill a website with ease. But then you just right click and bypass, and sometimes refresh, and sometimes Shift + refresh, and sometimes delete temp internet files first, and sometimes...You get the picture(or lack there of), but no pop-ups for me

Or try Linky-poo for a pop-up stopper.

Spybot is one very nice piece of software. I will have to agree with others that have already posted that I have ran tests to compare ad-aware and spybot by running ad-aware, deleting what ad-aware finds, then running spybot, and realizing that spybot finds much mroe than adware.

Also, I ran a separate test about a month later. In this test, I visited a number of sites and downloaded a few programs that I knew had adware and spyware. After doing this, I ran spybot first, looked at wat spybot came up with, and then I ran ad-aware. Keep in mind that I did not delete any of the findings at first for either of these tests. After comparing the two sets of results, I found that ad-aware did pick up on some of the stuff, but spybot found the same files and registry entries that ad-aware did and much more.

Thus, Xavier gives this program 5 stars!

Shameless bump, for those that missed this because they were busy over the weekend.

Spybot just updated their list. Go to Online box after opening Spybot.

if you use the hosts file and can't connect to a certain site, why can't you just go in and edit the hosts file... remove the references to the site you wanted to go to... and all should be fine. (Or am I missing/misinterpretting something?)

Proximitron rocks, but it has alot of functions the broadband user does not need. It's a beter program for someone who uses dial-up and wants to limit what loads on a webpage. But all in all, SpyBot rocks! Not to mention that you can't use another proxy prog with this one and I don't think this has a port forward function either...not sure though.

Be careful messing around with your HOST file. If you start getting alot of red X's instead of images loading on web pages you visit, then you know its being caused by your modified HOST file. Just a warning!
