I was actually sent an e-mail from usps that linked me to that page but I didn't have a clue what I was signing up for so I didn't bother.

Just poking around the usps site I see a $35 scale and larger 10 lbs scale for $40.

I got the email from USPS. Mostly I guess because I have an account with them, sorta (I ship USPS Priority for all my EBay sales). They are now offering free next day package pickup, so you don't have to drive to the PO to drop off your package (if you can wait an extra day). These 'scales' are part of the program. From the looks of it, they are folded pieces of plastic. You put your package on one, and if it bends beyond a certain point, then your package is over the limit (1, 2, or 3 lbs.) See Link Not a scale you'ld use for scientific work, but good enough for the USPS.

i bought a kitchen scale, up to 5 lbs... it cost me 8 dollars at bed bath and beyond. it works perfect for weighing up myost of my packages. anything over 5 lbs. i use my bathroom scale.
