You do have to get to the sites using the link provided from the IRS site. The State of Ohio has a free website for Ohio taxes, so state taxes were free for everyone.

First, are you in a state that has both state tax and federal tax? I am sure that federal is free in states that have BOTH taxes, since they get your money from the state return.

But I'm telling you, I did this last year when I lived in Texas (no state tax) and went over it again and again, because I read all the fine print and could not believe H&R Block was getting away with charging $20 for federal after saying it was free.

I got to the site from the IRS web site which claimed federal was free. That's why it was so unbelievable! I researched this and found others that had the same result. I can't review it right now, because the free efile link apparently doesn't appear until 1/17.
