Pure titanium - that might be true. I'm sure it's some sort of titanium alloy and those can be harder than steel.

Indeed. However, it isn't a titanium coating, it's a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, which is harder than steel. TiN is the telltale yellow color.

I suppose everybody's so used to hearing about "titanium" this or that that it's impossible to start using titanium nitride now.
