1.-Do any of these qualify for the multi-service discount? I almost certain the one from Tivo.com doesn't, but I'm not sure about the other two.

2.-Do any of these qualify for earning of TiVo Rewards points?
You didn?t become an elite member by accident and I know you would never suggest someone give you their referral points, but if any of us wanted to, instead of letting them go to waste? is it ok if we PM you for your account info?

1. I don't know. I don't see anything that would limit the BB or CC ones from the discount. Many times it will say that the unit doesn't qualify for multi-service discount, but that doesn't mean another unit you have doesn't qualify. Say you already own a series 2 on a monthly subscription and you buy one that says it doesn't qualify for multi-service. It can become the primary and you can get the $6.95 rate on the original one.

2. I don't have a referral points account. I've given the referrals for the ones I've purchased to my son. Thanks for the kind thought, though.

Looks like they're clearing out the single-tuner DVRs. I think the one with a built in DVD Recorder is $100 now too.

The Dual Tuner series 2's are $70 after rebate now, which is a pretty good deal too.

I am glad I have my Toshiba Combo Unit. Free basic Tivo for life. Are there any newer units with free basic tivo?

I *think* they've stopped making the units with free Tivo Basic. They're still around but they're kind of hard to find.

With any other Tivo, you must continue to pay the $12.95/mo for the first unit, $7/mo for additional units. They will only pause live TV without a subscription, they won't download guide data and they can't record manually like a VCR.

Yes, you have to have an active subscription plan otherwise the unit will not be useable.
Every so often the Tivo box uses the house phone and does a toll-free/local call to get updated Show guides and subscription status.....I seem to recall it checks every 2-3 days for updates.....if after a week it can't make a connection, it deactivates.
(There are forums on "hacking" Tivo units to avoid this, but I'm no expert...)

Far as the $8.33 plan, its the 3yr pre-pay plan for $299. $299 / 36mo = $8.31/month

cheers,
Souka

Why would you buy from CC or BB and fool with a MIR when you can order online from tivo directly? Also, has anyone seen any indication there will be deals on these on Black Friday?

No waiting, I guess. Plus you're only locked into a one year contract if you buy it online and you only have to pay $12.95/mo for service.

If you buy online, you pay $12.95 only if you commit for three years. If you prepay for one year (the length you're obligated to pay to get the rebate), it's $200, which is about $17/mo from Tivo.

Tivo is good about rebates, so there's no worries there. The best monthly price/minimum contract deal is to buy from BB or CC.

They really need to lower their subscription fees especially with the HD units since you have to pay for a cable card that is the the same price as a cable company cable box.

I'd be glad to take the referral points, if anyone is just dying to earn some for a stranger.

PM for details.

Bumping this because Tivo changed their prices today.

You can no longer activate a store-bought Tivo for $12.95/mo. There is a service commitment now, minimum 1 year. The one year plan is $20/mo, it becomes the original $12.95/mo with a 3 year contract.

The multi service discounts are the same way now too. It's $6/mo off the cost of a normal Tivo subscription based on the contract length. There are mixed reports of what people with existing $12.95/mo no contract subscriptions are being charged for additional units.

There's a big thread on this in Off Topic.

Yes, and it's mostly a bunch of Chicken Little "the sky is falling".

1. Existing customers are grandfathered. If you are on a plan now, you will have to choose between a new plan or the current month to month rate when it expires.

2. New customers are better off than they were. They get the basic box for free ($69 for the dual tuner model) and they pay the same $12.95/month if they opt for a 3 year plan. If they prepay for the 3 years, it's even better at $8.30/month.

Short term subscribers do pay more but even at the highest rate, it turns out that its still competitive with cable company DVRs around here.

So in effect I can do this.

1. Get the free Tivo from Tivo web site (no rebates).
2. Dont pay anything to them later.
3. I wont be able to record anything or use the Guide.
4. But I will be able to pause live TV.

Is this possible. If yes then I am all over it. I have a DVR with me but sometime I just want the ability to time slip on another channel too. So this will come in handy.

someone tell me if this is possible, i will jump right in.

No, it's not possible. The box is free "when you sign up for a service plan." Service plans require a 1, 2 or 3 year commitment and impose a penalty of up to $200 for cancellation of service prior to the end of the commitment.

I think he means pay the $20/yr or whatever it is for the Tivo service for a year, then stop paying it.

I'm pretty sure all you'll be able to do is hit "pause" on the remote and the live feed will stop. The Tivo will nag you constantly to be subscribed too, I'm not sure how bad the nagging gets because I subscribed mine a couple days after hooking it up, but in that time it was annoying how many times it "reminded" me to subscribe it.
