You misunderstand... AFAIK it was never a rumor that you couldn't run more than one antivirus
at the same time, it is reccommended that you do not. You can have more than one installed,
but it is a bad idea to have them all running at the same time. Some scanners have been known
to detect another scanner as a virus itself (as shown by the example above) because some of
the testing methods and virus signatures can get flagged as virus-like activity.
I was running Avast, AVG, a Trend av engine, and AntiVir all at once. Trend and AntiVir were always first to stop any attacks with no false positives like you commonly can get with Avast and AVG. AVG also bugs up a Win98 system.
Which versions? How long did each take to run a scan (seperately and together)?
How do you know that the antivirus programs were not having interference with each other?
What were some examples of false positives you saw?
What were some examples of bugs you saw?
Just like you can't get all the spyware unless you use both SpyBot and AdAware, it seems prudent to me to run at least two av programs at the same time for the same reasoning.
SpyBot and AdAware are not known to conflict with each other, and I've seen the same recommendation applied with them; run one first, then the other.
I've been doing it for over two years on my Win98 system with no related problems of any sort. I highly recommend AntiVir (free version) and think Trend is the best commercial av outfit. If you can't find what you want on their site they want to know about it and followup with a form if you have questions.
What kind of setup are you running BTW? I would think running all those scanners in the background
might have some impact on system performance.
