Sysclean is a free command-line tool from Trend Micro. It uses the PC-Cillin scan engine, it performs the same as if you were using a full-blown Trend Micro AV product (i.e. PC-Cillin Internet Security 2005) manual scanner.

Here is what you'll need:

Sysclean
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend Micro virus definition
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Simply put both into the same directory (you will need to unzip the pattern file) and run Sysclean.com. The GUI pops up and you can run a scan of your system.

You may ask - why do I need this if I can perform a "web-based" scan for free as well (and from almost every vendor) - well, quite simple...if you're system is believed to be infected, you should *not* be online. Better to toss this on a USB key or CD-ROM and run a scan that way. Plus - no need for IE!

Also...since you can't install more than one AV product on a system, this gives an excellent second opinion.

Anyway...some may know of this but some may not. I've verified with Trend Micro that this is the full-blown PC-Cillin engine...so enjoy!

Very nice, I have never heard of this and since it appears to be install free, it should be awesome.

Grisoft is ending support for AVG 6.0 on Jan 31st 2005. But AVG 7.0 has a free edition. There have been threads here on that subject but here's a link the the free AVG 7.0. Free AVG 7.0

By the way, thanks for the post sk3tch. It's going to come in handy on the computers I fix.

You guys are all welcome..glad it is useful! I personally love it...really handy for a quick second opinion.

Just remember that this is a manual scanner only - since it is command-line. So...no realtime scanning like AVG may offer (or the non-free apps like Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro's retail offerings). However, if you wanna ghetto it up you could set it up to do a full system scan perioudically using the Task Scheduler.

I could have sworn AVG sent me a notice we are discontinuing the avg free edition, and now a week later they sent one that says we are discontinuing 6 and we now have 7 that is free, anyway, I appreciate them still having a free service. It did miss a couple worms I had so this manual one is a good thing for a double check also. I actually tried the full version of PC Cillin and it shut down my isp with its firewall so I had to remove it. Well all set again fo free. Have a merry christmas!

Great, something new and not another rehash of AVG or Avast. A couple questions for those who have already installed this:

1. Is there a menu item for 1-Click Updates, or do you have to manually extract and place them in the proper directory like the freebie Escan?

2. How big are the updates anyway? Small like AVG, or do you have to download the whole program each time like Anti-Vir?

3. Is it crippled like Escan? Although it uses the Kaspersky engine, Escan only flags problems, but does not repair, delete, or quarantine anything. Does this Trend Micro freebie repair anything?

4. Are there extra items in the startup? Bit Defender is another on-demand scanner. I would left BD on my system as a 2nd opinion, but it requires two items that must loaded during bootup. Obviously, if a program is only used occasionally, it is a waste of resources to load it all the time.

You need to read more carefully.

1. No 1-click update. All manual.

2. Zipped = 5.3MB / Unzipped = 11MB

3. It says it will repair the items it finds but it hasn't found any viruses for me yet cause I keep my PCs clean.

4. No startup items. This is a standalone pgm.

Why not download and try it yourself. It only takes a few minutes.

RE: #3 I can confirm that it does repair/fix problems that it finds. It is actually the engine used for Trend Micro's Damage Cleanup Service which is part of their Enterprise protection product line. It will deploy and scan all managed systems (through OfficeScan) and clean them in emergency situations...so basically this is their full scan engine without all the bells and whistles and of course missing realtime protection (as it is only cmd line/basic GUI and on-demand).

Yeah guys..this doesn't install or anything..just runs from a folder..no registry changes, blah blah...so it is very simple and painless to try!

Hi ! As I clicked to do a scan with Trend's freebe, Avast! popped up saying 'sysclean.com has VBS.Redlof virus'.

I did download it from the link provided above. I told Avast! to delete it, but it couldnot. Had to drop to DOS and delete it.

So, could this thing run from outside of Windows? Like say we bootup with a winxp bootdisk with all of this on it, and try to run it then...it would be nice to have for computers that are so infected that you can't even boot into windows. But still, one would have to get on the internet to get the updated virus file...not a problem if you have another computer available.

That would be a false positive. Avast is not known for it's antivirus prowess.

Avast and AVG are unimpressive, overrated garbage, IMHO. BTW, it's a bad rumor that you can't run two or three av apps/programs at the same time. I was running Avast, AVG, a Trend av engine, and AntiVir all at once. Trend and AntiVir were always first to stop any attacks with no false positives like you commonly can get with Avast and AVG. AVG also bugs up a Win98 system.

The definition update files from Trend were running 2.8MB about six months ago. I think you have to download the entire ball of wax each time, not just the new ones. I have two of their floppys to run in DOS for emergency virus removal or containment or so you can clean up Windows well enough to get back into it if you can't and they work. The Trend engine came in a utility suite I bought which was reviewed better than Norton or McAfee a few years back and keeps gettinmg better and you never hear about it (if interested it's called System Suite at www.v-com.com and well worth a look.)

Just like you can't get all the spyware unless you use both SpyBot and AdAware, it seems prudent to me to run at least two av programs at the same time for the same reasoning. I've been doing it for over two years on my Win98 system with no related problems of any sort. I highly recommend AntiVir (free version) and think Trend is the best commercial av outfit. If you can't find what you want on their site they want to know about it and followup with a form if you have questions.

Thanks, and like others have said, AVG is pretty great. It's found stuff that even my customers haven't found.
