I too had subscibed to an affiliate of newsfeeds.com and had access to a large number of servers. However I found that many (most?) of the posts were incomplete, the retention was poor and it was a pain in the @ss going from server to server looking to complete my downloads. I tried Easynews and have never looked back. Even with one server the posts are usually 95% or greater complete and the retention is long, so it is almost always easy to find a repost if a piece is missing. Download speed also is excellent. Can't say enough good things about their service and support.
Recommend you and anyone else considering a paid news service give the free trial a shot and compare with your present service.

re: Agent vs NewsBin -- I use Agent for browsing headers, marking things that are interesting. Although NewsBin's multi-connection and virtual server/group features make it extraordinary for downloading, it doesn't come close to Agent's features for managing headers. Now, if we could just get Forte to add multiple connections to Agent and improve crosspost detection, it would be perfect! Sorry if this is OT, but it seemed relevant.

Although porn is what built the Internet there are plenty of us who use newsgroups on a daily basis, and who rarely, if ever, do so for porn, pirated movies, mp3's, or warez.

I'm an avid amateur astronomer, and regularly read sci.astro.amateur and alt.telescopes.meade. I'm also an active participant in a variety of shooting sports (and am a certified firearms instructor) and so read rec.guns on occasion. As an Agent user, I find alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent to be worthwhile. One of my favorite authors' (Iain Banks) works are discussed at alt.books.iain-banks. alt.horology and alt.collecting.pens-pencils cover two other interests of mine. And so on.

I don't know whether newsgroups are better than websites when it comes to porn. But for illegally obtaining movies, mp3's, and software, I would imagine that one might be better off using something like kazaa lite, than plying the newsgroups. Might be a little slower, but probably offers a wider range of choices.

However, I don't have much interest in such things, so perhaps I'm mistaken as to how best to obtain them.

I've been with Easynews for a couple of years. Speeds are great, retention is great. I resigned up with Newsfeeds as I wanted to be able to download a little more. I use Newspro to create a virtual server. With the virtual server, you solve most of the completion issues of Newsfeeds, then I use Easynews to fill in... Peraying for the Newsfeeds works out abot the same as downloading 12 gigs from Easynews straight and you can get a lot more than that...you can easily pull down 3 gigs a day if your into binary stuff.
