Free Unix environment for Windows

For people who need to keep windows around but don't want to mess with dual boot, there is a product called Cygwin. It works great and lets you open bash shells in Windows. Full access to gcc and a whole slew of unix tools. It's pretty slick. Don't know if anyone will think this is a hot deal, but it is really useful for some people (me anyways).

if you goto school, check to see if your school has a some sort of site license for exceed. you can ssh into your cs lab systems and open programs like ddd and the such. good supplement if you already use a console to do work

Exceed is ok, but I much prefer the freeware VNC, originally from ATT labs in the UK. (Google search IS your friend)

I've used CYGWIN for years, very handy for running X applications in Windows. I've also used fee-based X servers that I get from school, but CYGWIN is just as nice... and it's free.

Cygwin is hardly anything new. I have been using it for two or three years because they test our C++ programs with Linux at school and cygwin is the only thing I know of that can handle the make files I have to write use.

I guess it is a hot deal if you don't know about it and have to load Linux just to test a C++ program. Now you can stay in Windows and see if the GNU compiler works on it.

Or you could go the other way and install Linux as your OS and run WINE

Works for most windows apps out there.

Not an option for me......Wine can't run Counter-Strike.

Sure it works in Linux. Most of my favorite servers are Linux. It doesn't work in Wine.

No you're mistaken, the (client) game itself works fine under Wine and has for years now.

Yea, I can run RTCW and UT2003 under linux with no problems. In fact, I get a much better frame rate under linux!
