<< SinMen, yes we DO know what a vibratory slide rule is, although people have referred to it by different names. Those of us who use the slide rule can?t live without it! And we?re NOT kidding! >>

Well, then I hope for those that get this free "Slide Rule" won't be disappointed when they find out how the real feeder looks like and how it feeds on your nuts and bolts. Good luck putting your slide rule in this feeder.

well after last night i have been thinking. I do not need a new vibratory slide rule. I need a new vibratory feeder. I have three vibratory feeders at the house. 2 are 8 years old and unused, new in the box (and I plan on keeping it that way until they are at least 30) and there is a 40 year old one that is used but very little (by me that is). It is still in good working order as I have taken very good care of it, but it seems that getting it to vibrate like it used to is getting harder and harder. So maybe I need to trade the 40 year old vibratory feeder for a sleek 20 year old model. I hear they made some real improvements in the vibratory feeders in those 20 years. It could be tough to get rid of a 40 year old vibratory feeder though so maybe I could just rent one maybe once a week or so. Does anybody know of a good place to rent vibratory feeders? Maybe have a coupon code I could use? I have seen some along side a street I travel sometimes but they look in worse repair than the one I have.
I have this recurring dream about having 2 vibratory feeders at the same time, but I digress. I will do a search for vibratory feeder rental and see what I can find.

A friend of mine had a little too much to drink one night and thought it would be fun to calculate the capacity of someone else's vibritory feeder.

When his wife found out about it, she left him and took everything that he owned.

So be sure and only use your vibritory slide rule on feeders that you are leagally licensed to to calculate the capacites of.

I found some places that sell and rent vibratory feeders on the net here are the specs copied from one page:

While Vibratory feeders are not a new concept they are often regarded as an "Art Form"

The Standard
11ga, Class 304 stainless
Part orienting tooling both inside and outside of the bowl (very important to have part oriented)
Dual coil drive system, standard pneumatic drive available
Bowl diameter from 6" to 48" (48 inches!! oh my God!)
Feed rates to 350 parts per minute (my slide rule can handle that rate)
30 degree discharge angle available (could be handy)
The following features may be defined for or by the application
Bowl Diameter: up to 48" in base diameter
Bowl Rotation: Clockwise or counter-clockwise (doesn't matter to me which way it goes)
Number of discharge tracks (cool)
Feed rate: parts per minute-per track
Part orientation (refer to above)
Discharge angle: up to 30º (see above)
Optional powered linear track (powered would be nice)
Optional powered auxiliary hopper (all of these feeders talk about hopping, could be interesting)
Optional Hi/Low level track sensor (don't think I would pay for that one, I can usually tell myself)
Optional baseplate for common mounting of bowl and track (wouldn't pay for this either)
Elevated stand for free standing feed system (standing could be good for a change. You know Baptists can't do it standing up because people will think they are dancing.

Maybe I should refer this to a friend of mine.

He says that his vibratory slide rule has developed corrosion on parts of it. He's tried using some solutions to slow doen the process, but that only results in more splotches of corrosion popping up!

I basically told him, you're SOL...you shoulda used a slide rule cover you idiot!

I don't know if there's a warranty on this one, but if it's worth its weight it should come with some sort of warranty. At least free tech support on it would be handy. Actually, they should offer to send a field tech with a vibratory feeder to make sure that the system is always tuned up.

Well...I hope they can help him...

Thanks a lot for the post Wolf...

The UPS guy looked at me funny when I signed for the vibratory slide rule. Couldn't wait to do a calculation of my vibratory feeder. Various techniques allowed for proper application of the vibratory slide rule. Methodical calculation and an occasional glance at the basketball game seemed to improve results. Anyways, the slide rule indicated that my current vibratory feeder should operate fine for 50,000 hours continuous use. Since most use their vibratory feeders intermittently this should provide years of faithful service. It goes without saying that these results require proper warm up before reaching full capacity. Still looking forward to the next generation vibratory feeders though. If anyone is looking to get a new vibratory feeder make sure you get one with "AT LEAST" a 30 degree discharge angle. That really is the minimum.

OH, Cowhide, "Baptists can't do it standing up because people will think they are dancing." ....hehehehe.

My vibratory feeder is reaching its viratory peak, its constant readings on my vibratory slide rule have started cause said rule to start showing its age. I didn't know that slide rules were replaceable, only that their performance could be augmented through chemical enhancers.

ROTFL Cowhide - your're funny.

I dunno about trading in the 40 yr vibratory feeder for a 20 yr old model. Got rid of my 40 yr feeder recently and renting is the way to go for me. I'm not signing up for a new lease on a vibratory feeder albeit a newer model. Thanks for the rental specs. Bowl rotation! - now that's an option worth having!

After doing a little more research maybe I just didn't know how to tune my vibratory feeder correctly. I don't know why they don't give you instructions when you get them. After years of service I now know that the lowered vibration is caused by the spring not being stiff enough. For everyone interested out there here are the instructions for tuning your vibratory feeder.

TUNING INSTRUCTIONS for VIBRATORY FEEDER BOWLS

When purchased without a feeder bowl, it is necessary to "tune" the unit after the feeder bowl has been installed to obtain proper performance.

To determine the tuning condition of a feeder bowl, the following steps should be follows:

1. Gain access to the springs.

2. Check the air gap. It should not be less than .020" for this test.

3. Set the control knob at 100 dial setting.

4. Energize the feeder bowl and observe the vibration and feeding characteristics.

5. While observing the feeder, loosen slightly one of the spring clamp bolts on the spring rack. Note the change of vibration and feeding characteristics as you loosen the bolt.

If a tuning correction is required, proceed as follows:

UNDERTUNED UNIT: VIBRATORY FEEDER BOWLS

An undertuned unit is evident by a reduction of feeder bowl vibration when a material load is placed in the feeder bowl. The spring system is not stiff enough. The condition can be corrected either by adding springs to the racks or replacing the present springs with thicker springs. A small change to the spring racks will show a significant change in vibration. Any spring alterations should be in small increments. When changing or adding springs, ensure that a symmetrical pattern is maintained on the spring racks at all times. After each alteration to the spring arrangement, the air gap should be re-checked and re-adjusted if required.
OVERTUNED UNIT: VIBRATORY FEEDER BOWLS

If the current exceeds the name plate rating, the air gap should be checked and adjusted per the air gap instructions in this manual. With the air gap properly adjusted and the current within the limitations, check the feeder vibration. If the bowl speeds up excessively when bolt is loosened - it is overtuned. Simply remove springs or replace with thinner springs, keeping a symmetrical pattern on the spring racks at all times. After each alteration to the spring arrangement, the air gap should be re-checked and re-adjusted if required

That is absolute hilarity, Cowhide.

That "tuning your vibratory feeder" post will go down in the annals of vibratory slide rule wisdom.

Such sage advice, one can only presume you know of what you speak.

I invited some friends over last night to watch basketball and after a few beers the talk got around to vibratory feeders. After a few more beers we decided to try tuning my aging vibratory feeder. After many calculations with the slide rules and trying many different stiffness of springs and checking and rechecking the air gap I think we finally got it tuned. I must say I was pleasantly surprised at the vibratory feeder's performance. I think tonight we are going over to one of the other guy's house and tune his vibratory feeder. There is talk of making an instructional video to sell also. Who knows maybe thanks to Outlaw Wolf's post this could be the begining of a new career. Thank you Outlaw Wolf, I have learned so much from you starting this thread.
