A nice new service:

Callpacket Website

Free Phone Number

Free Incoming Calls

Free 3-Way Calling

Free Call Transfer

Free On Net Calls

Free VoiceMail

Free Virtual Calling Card

Free 100 USA Minutes Monthly

Free CallPacket SoftPhone

Works with many IP phones and BYOD devices

I use this as an additional backup to my VOIP service. It has an array of phone numbers (all on the west coast, including California) to choose from, incoming to those is always free. They give away 100 minutes free per month to any phone in the US. Of course, in-network calls (to others using CallPacket) is always free. They have a virtual calling card one can use from anywhere (even cell phones) to other users who have CallPacket set up at their location.

The "free" part is a special October promotion. I got in with a few phone numbers along the west coast (got an LA phone number, also a SF phone number and a San Diego phone number) because they may start charging for these before too long. Also, the 100 minutes to any phone is probably just for a very short time. They can't afford to give that away for free indefinitely, obviously.

Did they really call you to verify before activating your account? If so, do they allow more than one account per peron?

Blah, they don't have numbers at all for my area code or even for cincy. I'll stick with voipbuster for now, they're going to implement incoming calls next.

signed up for 4 numbers in different areas

So far I've received emails on 3 saying "your callpacket acocunt has been denied..." blah blah blah...

So I guess you're limited to 1

quote:
The reason our sales representative denied your account is:

- Fake names and addresses

- Incorrect billing information

- Wrong contact phone number

- Massive or duplicate sign up
/quote

The only one that is true for me was the last one -- as I attempted to get a number in several area codes

I signed up for 4, but used different everything to be on the safe side (IP addresses, slightly different name, different phone numbers, etc.)

Granorense-

You can set it up with your PAP-2 now.

Use this format:

SIP is voip.callpacket.com

SIP username: On your account page, usually starts with cp..then a bunch of numbers

sip password: on your account page

sip server: 67.43.156.90

This is cool for incoming (like Stanaphone) with different phone numbers. They don't have some of the conveniences Stanaphone has (i.e. free incoming fax and free conferences) but they do have the virtual calling card and the big one (as of right now): free 100 minutes outgoing to any phone.

Nice and thank you for the info, will have to try it out when I get home. Here is some information that can be tried in one of the RJ11s of the PAP2:

Sip Proxy : voip.callpacket.com
Sip Username :
Sip Password :
Call Packet Soft Phone: Offline
My IP Phone: Offline
Phone Number:
TFTP Server: 67.43.156.90

Looks like a good deal to me. Good way to check out their call quality for free. They had a local number in my area, which was convenient.

Granorese-

I am going to configure on my ATA this weekend. How is the call quality on yours? It isn't clear from the info on their site which codec they use. Is it g711u?

As far as I can tell the quality is fantastic, maybe even better then voipbuster which I have configured on line 1.
I have made several calls and people tell me that they can't believe how clear they hear me!

Do you have the linksys PAP-2 adapter?

Gran,

Did you use the Automatic Configurator at the callpacket site? On kind of a side note, I put in any mac address there and it keeps saying successful no matter what I change the mac address to (as long as the format is valid).

How did you get it to work? I put in the correct mac address (taken from Link-sys configuration page or router) then it says config files regenerated, please reboot device. As I couldn't find any other way to reboot, I unplugged the power wire, then replugged after like a few seconds, then tried it again waiting like 20 seconds.

I don't see any configuration changes when I browse to the site of the adapter and look at the line configurations, and I tried calling my number and it didn't work either.

Thanks,
K

BTW I have done the modification similar to the one done here:

http://www.telephreak.org/PAP2/

And now I have a firmware 3.1.3(LS)

This was all done as soon as a bought the adaptor, only after that did I do all the stuff I said in the previous post, just wanted to let you know...

perhaps if I cannot get the Automagic Configurator to work, you could send me a screenshot of your advanced configuration for the line...

I signed up for CallPacket this evening, and installed it on the second line of my PAP2--VOIPBuster is on the first line. I concur that the quality is very good.

K-
Do you have a line light on the line you are trying to get going?

If you did the PAP2 mod OK but cant get anything to work, check that you have redone the DNS on the system page. The unlock instructions DON'T mention that you have to dump the Vonage DNS servers and set up something else. Use either fixed addresses or DHCP, your choice.
If this is not done - no lights no how. ( the line lights tell you it is talking to the servers)

That done, plug in the info from the callpacket site and it should get a line light and be at least partially functional with the rest of it unchanged.

Thanks to ECartman in another thread who mentioned Callpacket and got me past a page that indicated no Calif numbers. And thanks OP for getting a thread going on it. I was very pleased to get a local number - actually suprised to have a choice of local numbers in 3 nearby communities. Good deal.

This is hot deal! The quality is very good. I sign up this morning and requested a 626 area code but I was assigned a 213 number but I'm very happy that this is totally free. I can use this as my fax number
